Honoring No. 43
Former Oklahoma State running back Terry Miller will be recognized during the game for his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame as part of the 2022 class. A two-time All-American, Miller finished second in the voting for the 1977 Heisman Trophy and was fourth in 1976. Only 23 running backs in college football history have logged two top-four Heisman finishes, and with Miller's selection all 23 are now in the College Football Hall of Fame. Miller played in 43 games at OSU, totaling 871 carries for 4,754 rushing yards, 49 rushing touchdowns, 5.5 yards per carry and 110.6 rushing yards per game. He is still the only player in OSU history to finish his career with three 1,000-yard rushing seasons, and he ranked fourth in career rushing in NCAA history following his final season. He led the Big Eight in rushing as a junior and senior, won the Big Eight Offensive Player of the Year award in both of those seasons and is one of only three Big Eight players with more than 4,000 career rushing yards. In OSU's record book, Miller sits at No. 2 in both career rushing and career rushing touchdowns, and his No. 43 jersey number is one of four numbers no longer in use at Oklahoma State. He also still holds the Cowboy records for most career 100-yard games with 26 and most consecutive 100-yard rushing games with 19. From a team standpoint, Miller helped coach Jim Stanley's teams become 1974 Fiesta Bowl champions, 1976 Big Eight champions and 1976 Tangerine Bowl champions. As a professional, Miller was selected in the first round by the Buffalo Bills with the fifth overall pick of the 1978 NFL Draft. He replaced O.J. Simpson as the Bills' starting running back and ran for 1,060 yards in his rookie season. He played for the Bills from 1978-80 and wrapped up his career with a one-year stint in Seattle in 1981. Oklahoma State now has seven representatives in the College Football Hall of Fame – coach Lynn "Pappy" Waldorf (inducted in 1966), Bob Fenimore (inducted in 1972), Barry Sanders (inducted in 2003), Thurman Thomas (inducted in 2008), coach Jimmy Johnson (inducted in 2012), Leslie O'Neal (inducted in 2020 class) and Miller (Class of 2022). Miller will officially be inducted during the 64th NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 6.

2002 Team Honored as Part of Cowboy Football Reunion
The annual Cowboy Football Reunion will be held the weekend of September 10, and the 2002 Houston Bowl championship team will be honored as the team of special recognition at Saturday's game. The 2022 season marks the 20-year anniversary for a 2002 squad that doubled its win total from the year prior and finished as Houston Bowl champions. That Cowboy team also finished the year on a four-game winning streak capped by a 38-28 Bedlam win over No. 3 Oklahoma and a 33-23 bowl win over Southern Mississippi to mark the program's first bowl victory since 1988. It began OSU's stretch of reaching 19 bowl games over the past 20 seasons and helped Cowboy football reach a new level of success. With an overall record of 8-5 to mark the program's first winning season in five years, the 2002 Cowboys were headlined by consensus All-America and new OSU Athletics Hall of Honor inductee wide receiver Rashaun Woods, All-Big 12 running back Tatum Bell, All-Big 12 defensive tackle Kevin Williams, quarterback Josh Fields, All-Big 12 kicker Luke Phillips and All-Big 12 returner Chris Massey.
Â
In the Rankings
Although the week two polls won't be released until Tuesday, the Oklahoma State football team was voted No. 12 in the preseason AP Top 25 and was No. 11 in the preseason USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll. It marked the highest preseason ranking for the Cowboys in both polls since 2017, when they started at Nos. 10 and 11, respectively. OSU has now been ranked in the preseason AP Top 25 four of the past seven and seven of the past 12 years, and has received votes in the preseason AP poll in 14 consecutive years, extending a school-record streak. The Cowboys have also been ranked in the preseason coaches poll in six of the past seven and nine of the past 12 years, and have received votes in the preseason coaches poll each of the past 16 seasons. Including 2022, OSU has now reached the top 15 of the AP poll at some point in 12 of the past 14 seasons and has seen a top 10 ranking in the AP poll at some point in nine of those 14 years. Although the first College Football Playoff rankings won't be released until November 1, it's worth noting that OSU has been part of the CFP rankings in six of the past seven seasons entering 2022. Arizona State was not ranked in either preseason poll.
Â
The Series
Saturday's game marks the fourth meeting between Oklahoma State and Arizona State, with the Sun Devils holding a 2-1 advantage in the series. The first matchup came in 1984, as OSU upset No. 12 ASU, 45-3, in Tempe to open a 10-win season for the Cowboys. The Sun Devils came out on top in the next two meetings, winning 30-3 in Stillwater in 1991 and 12-10 in Tempe in 1993. Coach Mike Gundy has never faced Arizona State, but is 10-3 in his career against current members of the Pac-12. ASU coach Herm Edwards has never faced Oklahoma State.
Â
Oklahoma State from a Distance
The Oklahoma State football team is 1-0 following a 58-44 win over Central Michigan in the 2022 season opener. The Cowboys jumped out to a 51-15 lead early in the second half and were able to let several young players get in-game experience during the second half. The headline of opening night was the play of quarterback Spencer Sanders, who turned in the best total offense performance in the FBS so far this season with 463 yards against the Chippewas. The senior also accounted career-best 406 yards and six total touchdowns to lead the Cowboys to win. Wide receiver Braydon Johnson also led the way in receiving after missing nearly all of last season. The defensive side of the ball broke in several new starters after losing multiple players to the NFL, but held its own by only allowing 15 first half points before rotating in some younger players.
Â
