Cowgirl Soccer Victorious In Season Opener
August 18, 2022 | Cowgirl Soccer
OMAHA, Neb. – A pair of second-half goals lifted Oklahoma State to a 2-1 road win over Omaha in its 2022 season opener at Caniglia Field.
Olyvia Dowell and Grace Yochum netted goals for the Cowgirls, who have now won six-straight season openers.
OSU fell behind early as Grace Ostergaard recovered a blocked shot and found the back of the net just 9:38 into the match, and the Mavericks took that 1-0 advantage into halftime.
But the Cowgirls would get the equalizer quickly out of the break.
Less than three minutes into the second half, Alex Morris delivered a pass to Dowell at the top of the box where Dowell made a move and fired a shot to the near post to tie the score at 1-1.
The goal was the 24th of Dowell's career, moving her into a tie for 10th on OSU's all-time goals list.
Yochum also continued her climb up the charts with her goal, which came in the 58th minute. With OSU awarded a free kick from 25-yards out, Yochum, Niah Johnson and Ally Jackson stood over the ball. It would be Johnson who tapped it to Yochum, and she blasted a shot to the near post into back of the net to give the Cowgirls a 2-1 advantage.
For Yochum, the goal was the 34th of her storied career, leaving her one shy of the OSU career record of 35 held by Jolene Schweitzer and Yolanda Odenyo.
The Cowgirls held onto the one-goal advantage as they outshot Omaha 15-2 in the match and kept the Mavericks without a shot in the final half. OSU also owned an 8-2 edge in corner kicks on the night.
OSU returns to Stillwater for its home opener Sunday at 1 p.m. against Missouri State at Neal Patterson Stadium.
