Gundy, Cowboys Meet With Media
August 18, 2022 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State football team continued practice during its last week of fall camp before school starts on Monday. The Cowboys worked out in full pads for two hours inside the Sherman E. Smith Training Center. Head coach Mike Gundy and select Cowboys spoke to the media before and after practice on Thursday morning.
Head Coach Mike Gundy
Opening Statement:
"Everything's good; just going to keep pushing. We've got today, tomorrow, and then we work out Saturday and then they're off for two days. That's the 48-hour period we give them. Science says give them 48 hours to let their bodies recover and when they come back on Tuesday, they should be in much better condition from the stress standpoint from their body from camp. Then we get into an in-season school routine and before you know it, we will be playing a game."
On Jabbar Muhammad:
"He's got a lot of Brodrick Brown in him. He loves to compete, never says a word. When you look at him, he's not going to just 'wow' you with his physical stature, but he just doesn't go away. He's kind of like a mosquito that you can't hit, just keeps flying around and causing problems. That's what he does out here."
On the backup quarterbacks:
"I'm particularly pleased with the backup quarterbacks and the strides they've made. My comfort level with them is 100%. They're really the new guys that have tried to work their way into full speed action, the other guys have done it."
On Langston Anderson:
"He's doing good so far and we just want him to keep going. He makes plays, he's staying healthy. We held him one day because he was a little tentative with his hamstring, but he came back the next day and is doing good. I want him to just get out there and play. He hasn't gotten a chance to get out there and play, so he's doing good so far. Hopefully, he can continue to push through. We're going to need him."
On backup running backs:
"They don't have any game experience, so it's a matter of how can they withstand the physicality of playing at this level? That position gets hit, I've said it a million times, more than any position. So, we're going to need them all. Every year we need three backs. The year we have one guy who carries it 23 times a game and we don't have to use the others unless we want to, I don't see that happening in the future."
Wide Receiver Brennan Presley
On his experience among the wide receivers:
"I'm like a rookie veteran, I guess you could say. I'm in the middle. I haven't been here as long as Braydon (Johnson) and them, but I've been here a year longer than Jaden Bray and those guys. I don't have too much to say because I haven't been here too long, but I'll offer whatever advice that I can to the younger guys."
On the wide receivers:
"I think as far as this year goes it is not about having one guy because we have a ton of guys who can do everything. Jaden Bray is a dominant receiver at X and Braydon Johnson is a speedster at Z with me and (John Paul Richardson) on the insides. Then you have more younger guys... and you have a bunch of playmakers all over the field. I think this year everyone will be out there making plays. It's not going to be one dominant guy, but the entire group will be making plays because we can all make those plays."
On having fun during fall camp:
"We're having a lot of fun. We're all still kids, so it's fun to come out here, hang out with your buddies, practice against them and talk a little mess to the defensive backs. That's the most fun part about it. I think people can get messed up thinking we're adults and figures, but we're still kids at the end of the day."
Safety Kendal Daniels
On where he's at in fall camp:
"I feel like where I should be. I could be more physical off the ball and there's more things all of us can work on as a safety group. We're just taking it day by day."
On his excitement to get to the first game:
"I'm ready to get out there. I'm ready to showcase my talent and help my team win, so we can show everyone how hard we've been working."
On Jason Taylor II's leadership:
"It's crazy how much of a difference there is between last year and this year. He's more vocal. He'll come up to me on the side and tell me how to do this better because he used to play my position and now he's moved over to the other one."
Defensive Tackle Brendon Evers
On returning for his COVID season:
"It has been a long road. It's something I'm really thankful for. I'm blessed by the grace of God and everybody that's been in my corner. I'm really happy to still be out here representing the school and hopefully we can hang another banner up."
On Oklahoma becoming a football state:
"I went and spoke at our offensive and defensive line camp in Bixby this year, and I told those kids 'Thank you for keeping this tradition going.' When I was coming up, people didn't look at Oklahoma as a real powerhouse as far as putting recruits out. Now we're top tier. It's really cool to see, there's no end in sight. It just keeps growing and we keep getting that recognition."
Offensive Lineman Taylor Miterko
On comfort levels during preseason training:
"I'm really comfortable. I mean, it's football. Wherever you play on the line, it's pretty much the same thing. At guard you're putting your hand in the dirt. So, I'm comfortable. I like it. I like it a lot. I mean, I can play anywhere."
On competing for a starting role:
"I got a lot of confidence in myself, and I got confidence in everybody I'm with. Being next to guys who have had a lot of experience feels good. I just want to be able to have them rely on me at the position."
On leadership on the offensive line:
"I think we got a lot of leaders. Everybody's stepping up. Josh (Sills) was that main guy. Hunter Woodard is the oldest, he's stepping up to that position. Really, it's been great. Throughout fall camp, we've seen a lot of being leaders. Everybody's being a little more vocal than they used to be. I think right now Woody is the guy. He's the veteran guy, he's played a lot of games. So, we kind of look up to him as our main dude, but everybody's been a good leader so far."
