Most Impressive Streaks: 22 Games with a 100-Yard Rusher
July 07, 2022 | Cowboy Football
It's no secret Oklahoma State could run the football in the late 1980's. Future NFL Hall of Famers' Thurman Thomas and Barry Sanders were both first-team All-Americans, while their successor, Gerald Hudson was a second-team All-America selection in 1990.
Â
The three running backs for OSU would combine to post 100-yard games on the ground in 22 straight games ranging from Oct. 24, 1987 to Sept. 30, 1989.
Â
Thomas began the streak as the lead back in 1987 with a 108-yard performance against Missouri and would finish the season with six-straight 100-yard games. Sanders would take over the workhorse duties in his iconic 1988 Heisman trophy season where he broke the century mark in each of OSU's 12 games. Following Sanders' departure to the NFL, Hudson began the 1989 campaign with four straight 100-yard games before the streak came to an end against Oklahoma. During the run, two Cowboys posted 100 yards in the same game six times with four coming in the 1987 season and one a piece in the seasons following.
Â
Behind their powerful rushing attack, Oklahoma State went 16-6 during the streak with a top-10 scoring offense in the country in 1987 and the nation's leader in 1988 with 47.5 points per game.
Â
Sanders' 2,850 rushing yards in 1988 is still an OSU and FBS record that hasn't been close to being broken. Shortly down the single-season rushing yards list at Oklahoma State is Thomas' final season as a Cowboy when he racked up 1,767 yards, which ranks fifth in program history.
