Most Impressive Streaks: 7 Games with 40 Points in 1988
June 08, 2022 | Cowboy Football
Barry Sander's Heisman Trophy season in 1988 is arguably the greatest individual season in college football history.
While fans have become accustomed to the high-scoring offenses during the Gundy era, none of those teams have accomplished what the 1988 squad did. Behind Sanders' performances, the Oklahoma State Cowboys would have one of the potent offenses in program history posting 40 or more points in each of their first seven games.
OSU was dominant on the ground averaging over 317 yards per game overall and scoring 54 rushing touchdowns on the season. Sanders would carry most of the load on his way to the Heisman carrying the ball 373 times for 2,850 yards and 42 touchdowns on the season.
The streak would come to an end in a 31-28 loss to No. 8 Oklahoma on Nov. 5, 1988. At seven, it marks the longest streak of games in program history scoring more than 40 points with the next closest being five games coming during the 2017 season.
Following Bedlam, the Cowboys would respond with four consecutive wins with over 40 points, including a 63-24 win over Kansas that was the highest scoring output of the year for OSU. The 1988 team averaged 48.6 points per game and 530 yards per game, both marks that are top five in OSU's single season records.
