Gabby Hentemann Earns First Career All-America Honor on Second Day of NCAA Championships
June 10, 2022 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
EUGENE, Oregon – Oklahoma State outdoor track & field continued its hot streak at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, with Gabby Hentemann earning first-team All-America honors in the women's 10,000 Meters on Thursday.
Hentemann held her own pace near the back of the pack for much of the race before picking off runners one-by-one on her way to a sixth-place finish with her time of 33:18.04. Her time breaks her previous personal best by a whopping 28 seconds, which puts her fourth on OSU's all-time list behind teammate Molly Born.
"Honestly, my strategy was to go straight to the back," Hentemann said. "Dave (Smith) told me to stay in the back, stay on the rail and stay relaxed. I was pretty comfortable back there until about halfway through. The pack started to break up and it got tough, but I just hung in there and tried to pick them off one at a time."
Hentemann is the eighth Cowgirl to earn first-team All-America honors in the 10,000 Meters and the first since Mary Davies did so back in 2006.
Earlier in the day, Gabija Galvydyte made OSU a perfect three-for-three advancing out of the semifinals this weekend, winning her 800 Meter semifinal with a time of 2:02.46. In the process, she defeated former NCAA and Big 12 Champion Aaliyah Miller to earn her automatic qualifying berth in Saturday's final.
Friday kicks off the busiest day of the competition for OSU, with four athletes competing across three separate events. Bailey Golden and Olivija Vaitaityte open the first four of seven events in the Heptathlon before finishing the final three on Saturday.
Ryan Schoppe follows the Heptathletes in the men's 1,500 Meter final after advancing through the semifinal with the sixth-fastest time of 3:37.94. The Big 12 runner-up in the 1,500 is looking for his first individual All-American finish after anchoring the fifth-place Cowboy DMR at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Ryan Smeeton rounds out the night for the Cowboys in the 3,000 Meter Steeplechase after setting the school record in the semifinals with his time of 8:26.64. Smeeton has previously placed second in 2019 and third in 2021 in the event and is looking for his first career national championship in his final collegiate race.
