Okstate.com kicks off its "Record Rewind" summer series today with a look back at one of the most impressive receiving days in college football history.
Cowboy receiver Rashaun Woods already had a consensus All-America season and 14 career 100-yard receiving games under his belt when the Cowboys arrived for their Sept 20, 2003, matchup at SMU, but no one could have expected what the senior from Oklahoma City was about to do Dallas.
It took less than five minutes for Woods to haul in his first touchdown of the game on a 2-yard pass after an SMU turnover, and then he just kept scoring.
He had a second touchdown before then end of the first quarter on 10-yard reception. That catch was the first of three consecutive Cowboy offensive plays that resulted in a Woods' touchdown catch, with the next two coming from 34 and 32 yards out. The first two were also caught despite SMU being flagged for pass interference.
Woods added his fifth touchdown catch on a 25-yard reception with 8:41 to play in the first half to set the NCAA record for touchdown catches in a half.
He added two more short touchdown catches in the third quarter before he was relieved by the second-string offense, setting the NCAA record for touchdown catches in a game at seven.
All of them were thrown by OSU quarterback Josh Fields, who also set the school record for touchdown passes in the process.
It was one of the most memorable days in the career of an all-time great receiver, as he also set the then-school record for receiving yards at 232 and led the Cowboys to a 52-6 win.
Woods went on to also set OSU career records for reception, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns, and each of them stand today other than the yardage total that has only been passed by James Washington.
