Maxwell A Top 10 Finalist For USA Softball Collegiate Player Of The Year
May 04, 2022 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State pitcher Kelly Maxwell is a top 10 finalist for Collegiate Player of the Year by USA Softball, it announced today.
A native of Friendswood, Texas, Maxwell leads the Big 12 and ranks second nationally with 12.1 strikeouts per seven innings and ranks ninth in in the nation with a 1.04 earned run average. She is also in the top 15 nationally in fewest hits allowed per game (sixth – 3.35) and shutouts (17th – seven).
In the midst of the best season of her career, she has already set or matched single-season career highs in earned run average, wins, complete games, shutouts, innings pitched, strikeouts and opponent batting average.
Maxwell has double-digit strikeout totals in 12 of her 18 starts this season, including an 18-strikeout performance against Kansas -- the most in a seven-inning game in school history. She tossed the fourth no-hitter of her career against Texas Tech on February 25 and struck out 16 Red Raiders in that contest.
The top three finalists will be revealed on May 18. The 2022 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will be announced prior to the NCAA Women's College World Series.
Maxwell is the third Cowgirl in the last five seasons to be recognized as a top 10 finalist for Collegiate Player of the Year by USA Softball, joining Vanessa Shippy (2018) and Carrie Eberle (2021).
She and the Cowgirls travel to Norman to take on No. 1 Oklahoma this Thursday through Saturday. All three games will be televised nationally on the ESPN family of networks.
