Record Rewind: Lee Cook's Five Interceptions in One Game
May 31, 2022 | Cowboy Football
When an NCAA record is still standing after 80 years, it must be a pretty impressive performance.
Lee Cook and the Oklahoma A&M defense are those record holders from their performance against Detroit on November 28, 1942.
Cook had five interceptions in the game with two coming on consecutive Detroit possessions. His five interceptions is tied for the most in a single game in NCAA history. Three other players, Walt Pastuszak of Brown, Byron Beaver of Houston and Dan Rebsch of Miami (OH), each picked off five passes in a game, with the last coming in 1972.
Cook was just one half of the dominating performance for the Agges as the defense pulled down 10 interceptions total on 41 pass attempts by Detroit. That mark has only been matched once by UCLA against California on October 21, 1978.
Playing on both sides of the ball, Cook also caught s 9-yard touchndwon pass in the game. Oklahoma A&M would go on to rout Detroit in the season finale by a score of 33-6 on their way to a 6-3-1 season record.
