Jordan Oliver Secures Spot in Final X Stillwater
May 22, 2022 | Cowboy Wrestling
CORALVILLE, Iowa – Former Cowboy wrestler Jordan Oliver clinched a berth in Final X Stillwater on Sunday morning at the World Team Trials in Coralville, Iowa.
Oliver, a two-time national champion for the Pokes in 2011 and 2013, defeated 2022 NCAA individual champion Ryan Deakin of Northwestern, 7-4, in the semifinal of the 70 kg bracket. On the other side of the bracket, Zain Retherford took down top seed Alec Pantaleo, 5-2.
With no athlete earning an automatic bid to Final X at the weight, the semifinal winners will not wrestle at the Trials, but will square off in the best-of-three series at Final X to determine who will represent the United States on the Senior World Team.
After an opening round bye put him into the quarterfinals, Oliver needed only one win to set up the semifinal match with Deakin where he handled business against Minnesota's Michael Blockhus, 4-2. The semifinal bout started off slow with Deakin getting on the board first with a passivity point after Oliver failed to score on the shot clock. Late in the first period, Oliver took the lead with a takedown that turned the score to 2-1 in his favor at the break. Deakin retook the lead, 3-2, early in the second with a takedown of his own, but a takedown and back exposure for Oliver with 30 seconds to go in the match gave Oliver the lead for good.
Oliver was the lone Cowboy, to earn a spot in Final X on the weekend. Alex Dieringer advanced to the semifinals at 79 kg, but was taken down late and defeated by Vincenzo Joseph in a match eerily similar to the semifinals of the U.S. Open. Carter Young and Dean Heil both went 0-2 in the 65 kg bracket, while Derek White pulled off a mild upset against sixth seeded Kyven Gadson, 5-2, in the first round before falling to the consolation bracket after a loss to Iowa's Tony Cassioppi.
Final X Stillwater will take place in Gallagher-Iba Arena on June 3 with two sessions beginning at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. CT. Tickets can be purchased at okstate.com/tickets.
