Justin Campbell & Jake Thompson
Cowboy Baseball Duo Lands On Player Of Year List
May 19, 2022 | Cowboy Baseball
DALLAS – Oklahoma State's Justin Campbell and Jake Thompson are semifinalists for the 2022 Dick Howser Trophy, which is given annually to the top player in college baseball.
Campbell and Thompson are two of 40 semifinalists for the prestigious award, whose winner is selected by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Criteria for the award, which is named in honor of former Florida State All-American and Major League Baseball manager Dick Howser, includes performance on the field, leadership, moral character and courage.
A sophomore right-hander, Campbell is once again one of the most dominant pitchers in college baseball. In 13 starts, he is 7-2 with a 3.39 ERA, and he has racked up 118 strikeouts, a total that ranks fifth nationally.
Campbell has posted double digit strikeout totals five times and has struck out at least eight in 10 of his 13 starts. He racked up a career-high 14 punchouts in the series opener against TCU.
With 243 career strikeouts, Campbell is just one shy of entering the top 10 on OSU's all-time list, and he is one of only four pitchers in Cowboy baseball history to record 100 strikeouts in a season twice.
Thompson is OSU's top hitter, leading the Cowboys with a .335 batting average, 12 home runs, 14 doubles and 50 RBIs, and he ranks in the top 10 in the Big 12 in seven offensive categories.
A left fielder who is the only Cowboy to start all 51 games this season, Thompson paces OSU with 19 multi-hit games and 14 multi-RBI efforts.
The finalists for the Dick Howser Trophy will be announced June 9, and the winner will be unveiled June 17 on MLB Network prior to the start of the College World Series.
