Cowgirl Softball Drops Texas, Advances To Big 12 Title Game
May 13, 2022 | Cowgirl Softball
OKLAHOMA CITY – The No. 7/8 Oklahoma State softball team defeated No. 16/16 Texas, 6-1, Friday at Hall of Fame Stadium to advance to the Big 12 championship game.
With the win, the Cowgirls improved to 40-12 overall and 4-0 against the Longhorns this season.
Morgan Day (10-4) got the win after pitching a complete game and allowing just one run on six hits. Typically a strikeout pitcher, Day fanned only one batter in the game, but instead relied on her defense that responded by committing no errors behind her.
"I'm just very proud of her [Morgan Day]," head coach Kenny Gajewski said. "I'm very proud of the Cowgirl that she has become and that she wanted to be from day one."
The Cowgirls used a two-run first frame to take the lead. Chelsea Alexander singled to right, and advanced to third on a bunt single from Chyenne Factor. With a ground ball from Miranda Elish, Alexander came around to score due to obstruction by Texas catcher Mary Iakopo.
Factor scored the second run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to center by Sydney Pennington.
Texas got a run back in the fourth on a solo home run from Mia Scott.
In the fourth, Hayley Busby bunted two runners into scoring position. Taylor Tuck brought home Jules Callaham on a sacrifice fly to center and advanced Pennington to third. Brianna Evans followed with a bunt single to score Pennington.
After allowing back-to-back hits in the top of the sixth, Day retired the next three batters in succession to stomp out the potential Texas rally.
OSU added to its lead in the sixth inning on a two-RBI single from Chyenne Factor.
Oklahoma State plays No. 1/1 Oklahoma tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the Big 12 championship game.
