Cowboy Baseball Drops Bedlam Series Opener
April 08, 2022 | Cowboy Baseball
With the loss, OSU fell to 21-9 overall and 5-2 in Big 12 play, while the Sooners are now 18-10 and 4-3 in the league.
Three Cowboys – Zach Ehrhard, Griffin Doersching and Marcus Brown – had two hits in the contest, while Ehrhard, Doersching and Jake Thompson each collected two RBIs.
Trevor Martin took the loss on the mound as he allowed two runs on three hits in the ninth to fall to 1-2 on the season.
OSU starter Justin Campbell worked six innings, striking out seven and allowing four runs on seven hits.
The Sooners jumped out to an early lead in the second as a leadoff single, walk and sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third with one out. An RBI groundout then plated the first run of the game before Campbell got a strikeout to end the inning.
OSU answered with a run of its own in the second. Doersching doubled to lead off the inning, and Nolan McLean added a one-out single. Chase Adkison then hit a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing home a run and evening things at 1-1.
OU regained the lead in the top of the third as a two-out single followed by an RBI double gave the Sooners a 2-1 advantage.
The Pokes once again answered, this time taking the lead, when Jake Thompson crushed his fifth home run of the season to right field to make the score 3-2.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Sooners once again found the scoreboard in the fifth. The rally started with a leadoff single, followed by an infield single and a throwing error that allowed the runner to score from first. Another single brought home a run and put Oklahoma on top, 4-3.
The Cowboys would once again find an answer, this time in a big way. OSU plated four runs in the bottom of the inning, two coming from an Ehrhard single and the other two coming via a Doersching double. The big inning gave the home team a 7-4 advantage.
Oklahoma got two runs back in the eighth, getting a pair of RBI singles to cut the OSU advantage to 7-6.
In the decisive ninth, the Cowboys called on Martin, the Big 12 leader in saves with nine. After a leadoff strikeout, back-to-back doubles brought home the tying run. The next batter was intentionally walked before Sebastian Orduno singled to center field to give Oklahoma the lead.
In the bottom of the frame, Ehrhard singled with one out. But pinch hitter Brett Brown struck out, and Ehrhard was caught stealing to end the game.
The two teams return to action Saturday at 8 p.m. in a game airing on ESPNU.
