Day, Elish Combine To Lift OSU Over Wichita State
April 06, 2022 | Cowgirl Softball
WICHITA, Kansas – A dominant performance from the pitching staff helped the No. 6 Oklahoma State softball team defeat Wichita State, 4-1, on Wednesday at Wilkins Stadium.
The win was the 250th of head coach Kenny Gajewski's career, extended OSU's current win streak to 12 and improved the Cowgirls to 29-6 overall and 3-0 against the Shockers this season.
Morgan Day (7-2) had a strong outing in the circle, allowing one unearned run on two hits and seven strikeouts in 4.1 innings pitched. She did not allow a hit through the first four innings.
Miranda Elish came on in the fifth inning and picked up her first save of the season, but it didn't come easily. She entered the game with one out and two runners on base and got out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts. An OSU fielding error with two outs in the seventh inning brought Addison Barnard, the nation's leading home run hitter, to the plate with the bases loaded. Elish induced a ground out to seal the victory.
OSU jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the first, courtesy of a Katelynn Carwile solo shot, her fourth of the season. Carwile had two hits in the contest, marking a team best 11th multi-hit game.
In the fourth, Chyenne Factor recorded an RBI on a sacrifice bunt, scoring Carwile to double the Cowgirl lead.
OSU added an insurance run in the sixth on a Factor RBI single up the middle to stretch the lead to three.
Kiley Naomi drove in the fourth Oklahoma State run on a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Julia Cottrill.
The Cowgirls travel to Ames, Iowa, to play their third Big 12 series against Iowa State starting Friday.
