April 27, 2022 | Cowboy Wrestling
STILLWATER - Several current and former Cowboy wrestlers will compete this weekend at the U.S. Open Championships in Las Vegas, taking the first step in their bid to become a world team member.
Serving as a qualifying tournament for wrestlers who have not already qualified for the World Team Trials, the Open is also a major factor into the seeding for the Trials, which will take place on May 21-22.
OSU is sending three current wrestlers and one incoming freshman to Las Vegas. Sophomore heavyweight Konnor Doucet will be the lone Cowboy at the senior level as he will compete in the 125 kg weight class.
Freshmen Cooper Birdwell (61 kg) and Teague Travis (65 kg) will wrestle in the U20 division, which is a qualifying event for the 2022 U20 World Team Trials on June 3-5. Also competing in the junior division will be highly touted signee Jordan Williams who was a three-time Oklahoma state champion in high school.
Four former All-Americans for Oklahoma State will be competing at the senior level and received their seeds on Monday afternoon. Three-time NCAA Champion, Alex Dieringer, is the top seed at 79 kg, while Jordan Oliver is the second seed at 70 kg. Dean Heil will take on the 65 kg bracket as the No. 7 seed and Derek White was given the No. 10 seed at 125 kg.
The top seven finishers at each weight class will qualify for the World Team Trials although some, including Dieringer and Oliver, have already secured spots in the tournament. In the case of Oliver, an appearance in the finals of the World Team Trials will bring him back to Stillwater to wrestle in Final X on June 3 in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
The U.S. Open Championships begins on Wednesday and will conclude on Sunday evening. A live stream and brackets will be available for fans on FloWrestling.
