STILLWATER - The Oklahoma State football team wrapped up spring practice on Saturday with its Spring Finale in Boone Pickens Stadium as part of OSU's Orange Power Weekend.Â
The two-hour event included a full-contact team scrimmage period, two-minute drills, individual position work, a 7-on-7 period, inside drill, special teams drills and ball security drills. Immediately following practice, all fans in attendance were invited onto the turf for a 30-minute meet and greet with the Cowboy football team.Â
More than 100 former Cowboy players were also in attendance, including Malcolm Rodriguez, Devin Harper and Kolby Harvell-Peel who will all be waiting next week to see where they will begin their NFL careers.Â
The practice was part of a full day in Stillwater that included ranked matchups in both diamond sports as OSU baseball hosted TCU on Saturday afternoon, while Cowgirl softball battled Texas Saturday evening.Â
Here is what head coach Mike Gundy and some of the Cowboys had to say after the final practice of the spring:
Â
Head Coach Mike Gundy
Â
Opening Statement:
"We had a good day. We got a lot of plays in and got some good work. A lot of the young players who needed quality time on that field in front of the crowd got some quality work. So, I felt like we had a great day. We had a good spring, as I said earlier. Today is normally a game, which is not much for us practice-wise, but we got to do a practice, so it worked out well for us. We got quality work and I was excited about seeing the guys play today."
Â
On the backup quarterbacks:
"I thought they played well. I see most of it, but some of it I don't see, and then obviously it looks different when I see it on tape. I thought that they played well, they competed, and handled the offense well. They get the summer to train and all through August and then hopefully if we need one at that position it's when we're ahead, so they can get some actual game experience. I thought they performed pretty well today."
Â
On which position groups have progressed the most this spring:
"I think the cornerbacks have, the linebackers and the offensive line have. We have just been down a bunch of numbers on the offensive line so they have had lots and lots of reps, but I think they have improved. We have had a really good spring overall, but I'd say those groups with the youth have improved."
Â
On the feel for the team heading into August:
"I always want more practices. We have to make up some ground in August in the scenarios that we didn't get this spring without having a second or a third offensive line. We can account for that in our preparation in August when we will have 25 offensive linemen, so we will be able to practice three groups at full speed. I keep track of all that, the analytical part of what we miss, so we'll make up for that in August. My thinking is we will have to get into more contact 11-on-11 a week earlier than we did this spring because of what we lost based on not having enough guys this spring."
Â
On Talyn Shettron:
"I thought he made some good plays. Again, I haven't watched the tape and can't see everything with the naked eye, but I know when the ball was thrown to him most of the time it looked like he made his plays. He's learning and he's young. He's a high school player for the most part who is out here competing, so he's made strides."
Â
On his thoughts on Derek Mason this spring:
"He's doing a good job. We limited them what they could do defensively today based on where we're at, so they were somewhat vanilla. His relationship with the staff is good and his relationship with the players is good. The veteran guys like Tyler Lacy, Kody Walterscheid, Korie (Black) and Jabbar (Muhammad) and Jason Taylor II, those guys who have been around and out there are the ones who have to help carry. We don't play as coaches. We put them in a position and then they have to grasp it and take off running with it."
Â
On Collin Oliver and Tyler Lacy:
"They're going to be good players. They're experienced, they've been out there and you know what you're getting with them. Collin had so many reps as a freshman we have a good feel for him and then Lacy is a potential NFL guy if he stays healthy and continues working hard. We're expecting big things from those guys."
Running Back Dominic Richardson
On stepping into a bigger role this season:
"It's great, I just got to keep my head on straight. I have to continue to learn as an older running back for the younger guys behind me, just keep working my butt off, work on pass protection and all that."
On being a more experienced running back:
"When I came in, I was a younger guy I looked up to Chuba Hubbard, Jaylen Warren and all them, so I learned from them, carry that on and now they're gone so I got younger guys behind me so have to teach them the same thing that I know. That's what it's all about"
On pass protection:
"I just train my eyes. Since the ball is snapped, I need to know where my eyes need to be. The cornerbacks, the safeties, linebackers, just train that to make sure I'm protecting my quarterback the right way and make sure I'm on the same pass protection as my O-line and the same protection as my quarterback."
Defensive End Collin Oliver
On how the team came together this spring:
"I think we did a good job adjusting to all of our missing pieces, filling pieces back in and especially on the defensive side, but offense too. Just filling in and we did what we needed to, but I feel like we did a good job adjusting."
On the defense's performance against the run today:
"That is what we pride ourselves on, stopping the run so we can be able to rush the passer."Â
On the defense and creating turnovers today:
"Just getting out here and flying around with the guys was pretty fun and pretty smooth. Definitely pleased with the turnovers. Turnovers are always a good part of defense and when you get them, it's cool."
