Jabbar Muhammad Using Spring Practice to Prepare for Junior Season
April 20, 2022 | Cowboy Football
A talented player who made his first start in last year's Fiesta Bowl victory, junior cornerback Jabbar Muhammad looks to step into a larger role in 2022.
Â
Muhammad is expected to become a reliable starter at corner for the Pokes who lost both starting cornerbacks from last season in Christian Holmes and Jarrick Bernard-Converse. He proved he belonged in last year's Fiesta Bowl, logging eight tackles and two pass breakups against the Fighting Irish. Â
Â
Sitting behind a couple of veterans for the past two seasons has allowed Muhammad to learn and add elements of their game to his own craft.
Â
"They are different guys.," Muhammad said. "Jarrick (Bernard-Converse) is really patient with his technique, and I try to mimic that in my game. Sip (Christian Holmes) was just a workhorse every play he works and hauls to the ball and I try to incorporate that in my game."
As the Cowboys adjust to a new defensive coordinator, early impressions of Derek Mason have been all positive, including his energy and knowledge of the game.
Â
"Coach Mason is crazy," Muhammad said. "He's an energy stick for sure. He's very enthusiastic and knows the DB position, so when I'm confused, I can go to him, and ask him for help, 'what do I do on this or that?' Having that is really helpful."
With spring ball coming to a close with Saturday's Spring Finale, Muhammad feels the Cowboy defense has made strides and is looking aggressive.
Â
"We're playing fast and physical and getting a lot of turnovers every day," Muhammad said.
Â
Being a part of a forceful defense will fit right in with Muhammad's style of play. When asked what fans should know about his own game, Muhammad's response was simple:
Â
"I'm a savvy guy, I like to get in people's faces, be aggressive, and I like turnovers."
Â
As Muhammad looks to take on an expanded role for the Cowboy defense, he knows what he needs to improve through spring ball to be ready for his junior campaign.
"For me, it's my point of attack plays, being in a good position isn't good enough anymore," said Muhammad. "Going up and attacking the ball, stripping and punching the ball, and trying to create turnovers and try to get the offense back the ball."
