Cowgirl Tennis Drops Bedlam Heartbreaker

STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State's women's tennis team showed tremendous fight in a valiant effort, but the No. 12 Cowgirls dropped a narrow 4-3 decision to the second-ranked Oklahoma Sooners on Friday at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
With the loss, the Cowgirls fell to 16-4 overall and 7-2 in Big 12 play on the year.
Oklahoma won two of the three doubles matches to collect the opening point. No. 14 Lisa Marie Rioux and Ayumi Miyamoto had the sixth-ranked duo in the nation on the ropes early but eventually fell to Carmen and Ivana Corley, 6-2. Mhai Sawangkaew and Dariya Detkovskaya dropped their match just moments afterward to OU's Layne Sleeth and Alexandra Pisareva, 6-2 giving the Sooners the doubles point.
Martina Zerulo and Oona Orpana got off to a slow start but rebounded, taking two straight games in a promising comeback effort against Anchisa Chanta and Dana Guzman of Oklahoma.
OSU was propelled by dominating first-set performances from four out of the six courts to open singles action, eventually leading to three OSU points. Oona Orpana ushered an impressive response to defeat 104th-ranked Dana Guzman, 6-0, 6-4. to get the Cowgirls on the board.
Ayumi Miyamoto answered the call on court six, evening the contest with a dominating win over Oklahoma's Emma Staker, 6-3, 6-2, in a match where the outcome was never in question. After a near-perfect first set, Mhai Sawangkaew prevailed in a tight second set, earning her a 6-1, 7-5, victory and giving the Cowgirls the lead.
Sofia Rojas dropped her match to Alexandra Pisareva, 6-1, 6-1. Martina Zerulo got off to a slow start, but battled back after trailing 4-1 in the second set to fall, 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) to Sooner Anchisa Chanta.
The match came down to the top court featuring a battle of numerous momentum shifts between elite competitors. No. 27 Lisa Marie Rioux and 14th-ranked Layne Sleeth went blow for blow in a match that came down to the third set. Rioux dominated the first set, 6-1. The next two were point for point, and Rioux fell short after a hard-fought battle, 6-1, 5-7, 5-7.
The Cowgirls will look to regroup and get ready for senior day tomorrow following the men's match, which starts at noon.
