STILLWATER – Former Oklahoma State and NFL football player Harold Akin recently passed away.
Akin, 77, was a three-year letterman at OSU from 1964-66, where he played for coach Phil Cutchin. He graduated with a degree in business to become the first member of his family to earn a college diploma.
Born in McAlester and raised in Bethany, Akin was selected in the third round of the 1967 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers, for whom he played tackle from 1967-68. Injuries cut his career short.
After football, Akin opened Carpet World in Oklahoma City – a business now known as Akin Bros. Floor Stores and run by two of his sons.
He and his high school sweetheart, Sally, were married in Stillwater and had four sons; Kevin, Jeff, Scott and former OSU football player Zac. Sally passed away in 2012. Harold married the former Judy Schatz in 2014. He has nine grandchildren.
