STILLWATER – Oklahoma State's winning streak reached seven Sunday as the No. 7 Cowboys completed a four-game sweep of Seton Hall with a 6-4 victory at O'Brate Stadium.
With the win, the Cowboys improved to 14-6, while Seton Hall fell to 1-16.
Jake Thompson was the hero as he blasted a three-run home run in the eighth inning to snap a 3-3 tie. The Cowboys' leading hitter finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs and also had a double.
Bayden Root picked up the win in relief to improve to 3-0, while Trevor Martin recorded his Big 12-best sixth save.
OSU scored in the first inning for the fifth game in a row to take the early advantage. Caeden Trenkle led off with a single before stealing second, and Thompson then drew a walk. Two batters later, Nolan McLean lined a ball to left field for an RBI single, making it 1-0 OSU.
The Cowboys added another run in the second. Hueston Morrill got things started with a leadoff double, and Chase Adkison drew a one-out walk while Morrill stole third on the same pitch. Trenkle followed that with a sacrifice fly to left field to double the lead.
The home team continued to add to the lead in the fourth. After the first two batters of the inning reached on errors, a flyout advanced one of the runners to third, but the other on first was picked off for the second out of the inning. Thompson then doubled off the base of the wall in left-center field to give OSU a 3-0 advantage.
Seton Hall flipped the script in the seventh when the Pirates scored three runs to tie it. The first batter of the inning struck out but reached first base via a wild pitch and stole his way to third. A groundout brought him in to score a batter later. Following a walk, Collin Sheehan delivered a game-tying two-run home run to right field.
OSU was able to answer in the bottom of the eighth. Adkison was hit by a pitch with one out, and Trenkle followed with a single. Two batters later, with two outs in the inning, Thompson blasted a 443-foot three-run home run to right-center field to put the Cowboys back in front. It marked the third-straight game in which Thompson has homered.
The Pirates managed to get a run in the ninth with a pair of hits off Martin and brought the tying run to the plate with one out before the right-hander sealed the win with a pair of ground ball outs.
Kale Davis was excellent in his first start of the season, working four shutout innings and only giving up one hit while striking out three.
OSU returns to midweek action Tuesday at Oral Roberts before opening Big 12 Conference play Friday when the Cowboys host Kansas.
