February 10, 2022 | Cowboy Basketball
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. ---- Former Oklahoma State men's basketball standout Lindy Waters III was signed to a Two-Way contract to play for the Oklahoma City Thunder, OKC Executive Vice President and General Manager Sam Presti announced Thursday.
Waters III has appeared in 28 games with 14 starts this year for the Thunder's G League affiliate, the Oklahoma City Blue. He has averaged 8.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.1 assists with 1.1 steals in 19.9 minutes per game. Waters III is shooting 48.8 percent from behind the arc during the regular season, which ranks fourth in the G League.
Waters III joins fellow former OSU men's basketball standouts Cade Cunningham (Detroit) and Marcus Smart (Boston) in the NBA. Former Cowboy teammate Cameron McGriff also saw action this year with Portland after he was signed to a 10-Day contract.
In 10 G League games this year, McGriff has averaged 12.8 points with 5.8 rebounds in 24.7 minutes per contest.
Cunningham, a native of Arlington, Texas, was recently selected to the Rising Stars game during All-Star Weekend. The event will take place Feb. 18 in Cleveland. So far this year, he's averaging 15.8 points per game with 5.5 rebounds to go along with his 5.2 assists.
He recently became the Piston to be named Rookie of the Month since 2010 and is just the 12th player in NBA history with at least two triple-doubles through 40 career games.
For Boston, Smart is averaging 11.5 points per game with 5.4 assists to go along with 1.8 steals per contest in 47 games of action.
A native of Norman, Okla., Waters III started 104 games in his career, which tied for the 10th most in school history. Known for his sharp-shooting abilities, he finished his career with 1,152 career points, which ranks 31st in school history and is one of just five Cowboys to win in every Big 12 Conference road venue.
McGriff, a native of Grand Prairie, Texas, started his final 78 games at Oklahoma State, which is tied for the ninth-longest streak in program history and earned his second straight honorable mention All-Big 12 Conference selection in 2020. He is one of just five Cowboy players to win in every Big 12 Conference road venue.
