STILLWATER – It's easy for an observer to say there is more to life than sports, but from a high-level student-athlete's perspective, it may not always feel that way.
In big-time college athletics, there is a constant burden of expectation and an underlying sense that one's worth correlates directly to individual and team performance.
At Oklahoma State, student-athletes receive elite-level training and performance coaching in state-of-the-art athletic facilities, but they also get more, because life after athletic competition awaits.
Jawauna Harding and Lerin Lynch are part of OSU's student-athlete development group that helps with the transition into life after college.
Recently, they hosted an etiquette dinner for seniors from all sports. The purpose of the event was to simulate a formal dining environment similar to what could be experienced as part of a job interview.
"The goal here is to develop and prepare for the next step, so whether you're being recruited by professional scouts or if you are being recruited for a professional career (outside of sports), we want to make sure you are the most prepared and ready for that after college," Harding told OSU's student-athletes at the dinner.
Lynch said that as well as OSU's student-athletes compete on the field, that she and others within OSU Athletics also want them to have those skills to go on in their career after sports.
"We want to give them the tools to have in their toolbelt to practice as they go on," Lynch said. "Whether that be in an interview setting or if they are representing their business at a convention. We want them to have those skills.
The etiquette dinner was one element of a larger plan from the top levels of OSU Athletics to position student-athletes to be successful after graduation.
"Whether it's the résumé writing, the interviewing skills, the networking skills they've learned and culminating with this etiquette dinner, we prepare them for whatever is next in life for them," said OSU athletic director Chad Weiberg.
