Two Cowboys Claim Individual Titles at Reno Tournament of Champions

RENO, Nev. - Oklahoma State wrestlers Trevor Mastrogiovanni and Gavin Stika took home individual titles from the Reno Tournament of Champions, while the Cowboys placed fifth as a team on Sunday.

OSU sent a limited group of six attached wrestlers, including Stika, Daniel Manibog, Reece Witcraft, Jalin Harper, Zach Blankenship and Chance McLane. Three more Cowboys wrestled in the tournament unattached, including Mastrogiovanni, as well as Andrew Bloemhof and Travis Mastrogiovanni.

Altogether, OSU had two champions, a runner-up and four more individuals who placed in the top six of their respective brackets. The Cowboys totaled a 38-10 record in individual matches throughout the tournament.

The Pokes went undefeated in the first two rounds as each wrestler won their round of 32 bout, except for Stika whose first bout came in the round of 16. Five Cowboys advanced to the semifinals of their respective brackets, while three advanced to the finals in Mastrogiovanni, Bloemhof and Stika.

The lone starter to wrestle for OSU after a 3-2 start to the dual season, Mastrogiovanni rolled through the 125-pound bracket behind three falls and a decision to advance to the finals where he met Michigan State's Tristan Lujan. He defeated No. 32 Lujan, 5-2, in the championship bout.

Stika made his first appearance of the season at 184 pounds where he went 4-0 in the tournament with two bonus-point wins and a 4-0 decision over Wyoming's Quayin Short in the championship match. Bloemhof nearly became the third Cowboy to claim an individual title, but fell short in a 3-2 decision to Michigan State's Jordan Hamdan.

Reece Witcraft and Jalin Harper both advanced to the semifinal rounds at their weight classes. At 133 pounds, Witcraft won his first three matches with bonus points as he recorded a fall and two major decision. He dropped his semifinal bout against Aden Valencia before defeating Western Wyoming's Cody Phelps, 10-2, to take third place. Harper won his first two bouts at 165 pounds, but dropped a 6-2 decision to Michigan State's Caleb Fish and a 2-1 decision in the third-place match.

Chance McLane advanced to the quarterfinal round behind three bonus-point wins before falling to the consolation round after a close loss to Wyoming's Cole Moody and ultimately finished fifth at 165 pounds, while true freshman Zach Blankenship also placed fifth in the 125-pound bracket. He went 5-1 on the weekend with his lone loss coming to Wyoming starter and U20 World Freestyle champion, Jore Volk. Both Daniel Manibog and Travis Mastrogiovanni posted 3-2 records at 157 pounds.
