Brown Named a Semifinalist for the Groza Award
November 10, 2022 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State kicker Tanner Brown is one of 20 semifinalists for the 2022 Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award, it was announced Thursday by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission.
This marks the first time that Brown has been a semifinalist for the award, which is given annually to the nation's top collegiate place-kicker.
A senior from Saugus, California, Brown is one of five FBS kickers with at least 16 field goal attempts and a success rate better than 90% this season, and he ranks No. 8 in the FBS in scoring among all players with 10.1 points per game.
In 2022, five of his kicks have come from at least 40 yards out - including a long of 52 yards that he hit in overtime on the road against a top-15 team in front of a sellout crowd - and nine of the 15 made field goals have come from at least 34 yards away. Going back to last season, Brown has made 18 of his past 19 field goal attempts. His 1.88 made field goals per game average also ranks among the top five players in the FBS.
Earlier this season he made eight total fields against Texas Tech and TCU to become just the third kicker in school history to make eight in a two-game stretch. He joined three-time All-American Quinn Sharp, who made eight in 2012 vs. TCU and Kansas State, and three-time All-Big Eight pick Larry Roach, who made eight in 1982 vs. Missouri and Oklahoma. He earned Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week for both games.
Brown also made 16 consecutive field goals during a stretch from last season into the beginning of this one to tie for the third-longest streak in OSU history. He has also made all 72 of his career PAT attempts, which ranks as the seventh-longest streak in school history. None of this comes as a surprise either, as he was 17-for-21 on field goal attempts in 2021 and earned JUCO All-America honors earlier in his career.
A panel of more than 100 FBS head coaches, SIDs, media members, former Groza finalists and current NFL kickers will vote to select the three Groza Award finalists, which will be announced on November 29 and honored at the 31st annual Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award Banquet on December 5 in Palm Beach County. The same panel then selects the winner, who will be announced live on ESPN during the Home Depot College Football Awards on December 8.
