Cowgirls Take Down Florida State To Open Play In Cancun

CANCUN, Mexico — Oklahoma State's women's basketball team held on down the stretch to knock off Florida State, 79-77, in the Cowgirls' first game at the Women's Cancun Challenge at the Hard Rock Riviera Maya.
The Cowgirls improved to 5-1, while the Seminoles dipped to 5-1 on the year.
OSU was hot out of the gate early, erupting for 29 points in the first quarter after connecting on 11 of its 16 shots from the floor. Junior Taylen Collins' jumper at the 8:15 mark gave OSU a 7-5 lead and the Cowgirls would never trail for the remainder of the contest.
Junior Lexy Keys poured in nine points in the quarter, while fifth year Terryn Milton added eight of her own to give the Cowgirls an eight-point advantage through the first.
Halfway through the second, junior Lior Garzon drilled a 3-pointer to give OSU its first double-digit lead of the contest at 37-27. The Cowgirls would extend the margin to 15 on two occasions in the closing stretch of the quarter before fifth year Naomie Alnatas drilled a jumper in the paint with 16 seconds left to send OSU into the break with a 49-35 advantage.
The Seminoles opened the second half with a 7-0 run to cut the OSU advantage in half before OSU answered and a jumper from Alnatas pushed the lead back to 11 with six minutes to go in the frame.
FSU would score the final three points of the quarter and once again cut the lead to seven after holding OSU to 10 points.
OSU held a 10-point advantage three minutes into the fourth before the Seminoles began to chip away. The Seminoles scored four in a row to get within 74-70 at the 3:15 mark before fifth year Claire Chastain got a putback for OSU.
Chastain added a pair of free throws on OSU's next trip to counter a pair from the Seminoles.
Florida State got a 3-pointer with a minute left and a layup with 13 ticks remaining to trim the OSU lead to one at 78-77.
Milton would knock down a free throw on OSU's next possession and the Cowgirl defense held on FSU's final possession to secure the win.
Alnatas led OSU with 19 points, while Milton and Collins each recorded double-doubles and Keys added 12 points of her own. Milton finished with 17 points and 10 boards, while Collins scored 12 points to go with a career-high 17 rebounds.
