Oklahoma State Quotes
Oklahoma State head coach Mike GundyÂ
Opening Statement:Â
"It sure was a fun game to watch. Obviously, we had 190 offensive plays, 104 for them and 86 for us, a lot of plays and everyone got their money's worth. So, we had special teams returned yards and penalty yards at an advantage, we were just under 60 so a little under half the field. We were plus turnovers and that's really the big difference. On third downs we were 8-of-18, and they were 8-of-22. We were 1-of-1 on fourth and they were 4-of-7 on fourth. As I mentioned on Monday, this would be a challenge for us because we haven't played a team that plays as up-tempo as this. So, we were learning on the run and had quite a few new guys who had to play defensively. We had a few guys get beat up, so we had to play some other guys defensively and they did a good job picking it up. I thought our defensive coaches made some really good adjustments at halftime. I think we held them to seven in the half and we scored 21. We didn't rush the ball as well as we needed to rush the ball, but we did at the end of the game. Interestingly enough on the last drive when they knew we were going to run it, we rushed the ball better than we did in the other three quarters. It's a great win for us. I think there's a tremendous amount of parody in this league, we're going to be seeing games like this every week. That's what I told the team weeks ago, weekly, every other day and again today. Conditionings going to play a big factor in this, I think we were in really good shape at the end of the game, we had gas in the tank, we could roll. It gave us a chance to finish the game off. We can enjoy this one tonight and then tomorrow we have to get back to work to travel on the road to play a team that's playing really good football. Looking forward to that and looking forward to a good week of work."Â
On some players on the defense getting hurt:Â
"We had quite a few guys I think go out on defense, so the young guys had to play. We were pretty young and immature out there defensively, but they rallied around and made some plays. They hit us on a couple deep balls but really our cover was pretty good, their kids made plays. They did a good job covering us today also."Â
On Spencer Sanders:Â
"We were pretty average protecting Spencer (Sanders). I'll have to go back and look and see but I didn't think we did a good job protecting him. I've said it a number of times, maybe we did, and I didn't see it, but I didn't get that feel. That could play a role in some of that. He's been around a long time, he's competitive, made a play there at the end. He made a good play converting the third down by the end. That's the advantage of having a material quarterback."Â
On Kendal Daniels' targeting:Â
"It's targeting. Tough game you know, but the ways the rule is set up that's targeting. You cannot lower your head and they know that. He's young and we've talked about it. We talked about it Friday, we talked about it this morning before we came over. Those are things I remind him all the time. In the heat of the moment, all he knows is he had a dead shot of the quarterback in the endzone. You cannot lower your head; you have to keep your eyes up the whole time. So, there have been rules put in place to protect and it's a good rule. Nobody likes the rule and people think football's football until that's your kid getting hit. It was the correct call, and he needs to learn to keep his face up. If he keeps his face up and goes through the rims, it's all good."Â
Oklahoma State quarterback Spencer SandersÂ
On focus of running the football:Â
"We just got to be strong. I have to be strong running the ball, Dom's got to be strong, offensive line has got to be strong. We all came together in that second half."Â
On adjustments made to strengthen run game:Â "Dropping a lot of people. There's not a lot of windows. We just got to keep being tough. We got some man and that was good, we capitalized sometimes. Sometimes they won. They made some plays, and we made some plays. We just made a little bit more than they did. We came up victorious."Â
On the two-yard touchdown run:Â
"It was a roll out with two eligible, they got held up at the offensive line. I faked a pass, and I knew I had to take this one and be strong."Â
Oklahoma State defensive coordinator Derek MasonÂ
On Tech's 104 offensive plays:Â
"You saw a lot of guys play tonight. We're talking about goons, goblins, gremlins. We got to play a lot of guys. Part of the reason we have to play so many guys is because the Big 12 looks the way it does. This isn't the first team that's going to try to make you play a lot of plays. We didn't do as well getting off the field on third downs like we should have. I think, overall, as I look at this group of guys, they're going to learn from this game. This game taught us a lot about how we need to start, how quickly we need to get to our adjustments and the last thing is just being resilient. The way we practice, who we are, it all stands up. Cowboy culture is alive and kicking.Â
On learning about the change in quarterback for Texas Tech:Â
"It was different. A lot of people don't understand, when you get a different quarterback, the dynamics are different. He's a better thrower and can run, as well. He knows how to play, and he'll probably play on Sundays. When you look at their plan, they're probably more like Central Michigan. Spin it, get it out, not let him get hit. They did a great job in protection, and I thought he did a good job divvying the ball, but I think as the game went on, we pressured and confused him. I think that was the key. Us being able to get the run under control, and not letting these dudes extend drives on third down, is when we really started to show up."Â
Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Kasey DunnÂ
On putting up 41 points:Â
"It's huge. Using a Tiger Woods analogy, we didn't have our A-game. We were still able to score. We were still able to win. For us to come out of it with that kind of performance offensively and still score 41 is a big deal. Any time you're over 40 points, things are going right. I don't think we had any defensive points or special teams' points. Obviously, a lot of short fields for us that contributed to those opportunities, so I don't want to diminish anything that our defense and special teams did. At the end of the day, those guys did a good job of pushing the ball down the field and putting it in the end zone."Â
On the offensive line's performance:Â
"I thought it was enough to finish it. I wish we could have controlled the line of scrimmage a little bit better. Some of those scores showed some issues that we had, and that's the first place that I'm going to look at and see where we're at there. Or if it's play call. I don't know until I get it on tape. Overall, again, 41 points on those guys, pretty good. I'll take it."Â
Oklahoma State receiver Bryson Green
On his chemistry with Spencer Sanders:
"I think it's grown where we'll hang out more outside the field, so I think that plays a huge role in that. Him being comfortable with everyone on the field so he's comfortable throwing me the ball, he's comfortable with throwing Braydon Johnson the ball, J Bray [Jaden Bray], JP [Richardson], BP [Brennan Presley] because he trusts us all with the ball in our hands."
On his chunk plays today:
"Coach Dunn does a great job during practice making sure we get those looks from our scout team DB's or actual DB's like KB (Korie Black) and Jabbar (Muhammad), so they do a great job giving us those looks in practice, so it translates to the game."
Oklahoma State lineman Hunter Woodard
On the offensive line's performance:
"I mean, it's tough for me to say. I think we competed, but I won't fully know until I get home and watch the TV copy or watch film up here."
On Joe Michalski filling in due to injuries:
"I knew Joe would be fine. He stepped up last year for a couple huge games and he did great, and this year he's been rotating a bunch with us, so I never doubt him."
Â
Oklahoma State defensive end Ben Kopenski
On why he has stayed at Oklahoma State with so much talent ahead of him:
"I came here originally just for my degree, and I tried out for the team, so that's always been by backbone. I've been studying construction and so I'm on my fifth year of that and when I graduate in May, I'm going to be looking for a job. I've been focusing on my degree, so it's to stick around when academics is your core."
On if he can learn from such a talented group of pass rushers:
"Oh absolutely. The depth is crazy. Everybody kind of has their own moves. Everybody has their own little plays and what not so you can learn a lot from what other people do and all the experience."
Oklahoma State safety Jason Taylor II
On if he is a vocal leader of the defense:
"Oh yeah I definitely am. Sometimes too much, but I'm definitely that guy. I try to shoot for perfection, you know."
On having a lot of young guys play due to injuries:
"I think that it's just all a process. We're heading in the right direction, I think, so that's all we have to keep doing is getting better."
On if they will benefit from playing against the speed of Texas Tech:
"Yeah, I definitely think so. I think they're really fast and first half they kind of got us on our heels a little bit, but we adjusted and were able to make some stops."
Oklahoma State linebacker Mason Cobb
On the difference in the first half and second half:
"It was just kind of like playing it safe. Sometimes we get excited and in the first half we're jumping out of the gas, missing tackles, stuff like that. Second half we came in and talked about, 'All we've got to do is make tackles,' and that's what carried us in the second half."
On how they kept up with Texas Tech's offense:
"Coach Glass man, body by Glass. It makes that kind of stuff easy. That last drive was tiring, but we train like this all year round, so it was easy."
Texas Tech Quotes
Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire
Opening statement:
"I'm really proud of the guys. Coming into a great environment, playing the No. 7 team in the country and a really good football team. We fought right there throughout the game, I'm proud of our players."
On Oklahoma State offense:
I thought when they needed the yards, their quarterback did a good job of running the football. We got them into some situations to where it was third down and he converted with his feet. I thought he did a good job throwing the ball, but with a guy like that, we just didn't get him down enough. There's a couple time when we didn't get enough pass rush and he was able to extend the play with his feet or extend the play throwing the ball.
On early-game strategy:
I thought we started well. We took a shot there with the little bloop kick and the kid did a great job of fair catching the ball and then they go down and score to tie it at seven-to-seven after a couple of plays… I thought (starting quarterback Behren Morton) did a great job… The thing we were going to do today with their D-Line, which is the strength of their football team, we felt like if we could get the ball out quick enough on the edges and attack them that we could stay ahead of the sticks. But I thought Behren did a great job today.
On second half momentum swing:
"I think (Oklahoma State) did a really good job of adjusting, they started dropping eight (into coverage) … I've been a part of that defense and whenever you're good enough up front to drop eight and still generate pressure, you've got a good defense. We had some negative plays and then just their ability to be able to drop eight and still pressure us when we were throwing the ball, that was the biggest thing on those last few drives."
Texas Tech linebacker Krishon Merriweather
On how he performed against the Oklahoma State offense:
"I would say I was taking advantage of the gaps from the defensive line, taking the blocks and opening the gaps for me."
On what the OSU offense did right:
"They were taking advantages of the calls we made, so actually reading the plays and things like that."
On if the defense was worn down after the number of plays they played today:
"I wouldn't really say worn down; this is the most amount of plays we've played in a game so far this season."
On how difficult it was to defend Spencer Sanders and his mobility:
"Just trying to keep him in the pocket and keep him one dimensional the whole game."
Texas Tech quarterback Behren Morton
On how the offense played:
"We harped this whole week on tempo, and I think we executed early, we got lazy with our tempo towards the end of the game. We jumped on them fast with our tempo, just like we talked about this week. I think we did a really good job on our tempo."
On how crucial the first touchdown drive was:
"The whole week we were talking about how wanted the ball, how we were going to take the ball and we got to start fast. So, this week we harped on when we get the ball, we got to go fast, and I think we did a good job (at that). We had one little play that got six yards then tempo just took over the rest, if we can keep doing that, we're going to be hard to beat."
On what changed after halftime:
"I think they adjusted well after halftime, we harped on them fast with the tempo and they started figuring out our tempo and I think at the end of the day we didn't execute good enough, and it starts with me. It starts with nobody else but me and at the end of the day we just got to get better each week, because three-and-outs can't happen like that. Moving forward, we're going to be better, I know we are. I know this team and I know how we're going to adjust from this, and we're going to bounce back from this, and I'm not worried about it one bit."
