Series History: Cowboys Look to Continue Recent Success Against Texas on Homecoming Weekend
October 20, 2022 | Cowboy Football
The Oklahoma State football team returns to Stillwater this week to face Texas in the 101st edition of "America's Greatest Homecoming".
Saturday's game marks the 37th meetup between the teams in a series that dates to 1916. It will also mark the 27th consecutive season in which the two teams meet, which started in 1996 with the beginning of Big 12 Conference play. Texas holds a 26-10 series record against the Cowboys and has a 9-3 advantage in games played in Stillwater.
However, recent success favors the Cowboys who have won eight of the past 12 matchups between the teams, including two of the last three games in Stillwater. Last year's meeting in Austin saw the Pokes trail 17-3 before Jason Taylor II intercepted a pass from Casey Thompson in the red zone and take it back 85 yards for a touchdown late in the second quarter. Oklahoma State would build off the momentum in the second half to rally to a 32-24 win behind Jaylen Warren's 193 rushing yards and a Cowboy defense that held Texas to seven points in the second half.
The Cowboys and Longhorns will play in front of a sold-out Boone Pickens Stadium, as the teams meet on Homecoming Weekend like they did in 2018 when OSU upset No. 6 Texas. Of note, Oklahoma State is 56-38-6 all-time in Homecoming games and have won five of their past six and 11 of their past 14 on Homecoming.
Texas enters the game ranked No. 20 in the country with a 5-2 overall record and 3-1 in conference play, with losses to No. 6 Alabama and Texas Tech by a combined four points. The Cowboys are ranked No. 11 at 5-1 overall and 2-1 in Big 12 play, looking to bounce back from last week's double-overtime loss on the road to No. 8 TCU. In his career, Mike Gundy is 8-9 against Texas, while Texas coach Steve Sarkisian is 0-1 against Oklahoma State. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. and will be televised on ABC.
