Cowgirl Tennis Routs No. 21 LSU
January 30, 2022 | Cowgirl Tennis
COLUMBUS, OHIO- Oklahoma State's 24th-ranked Cowgirl tennis team dominated No. 21 LSU, 4-0, in their second match at the ITA Kickoff in Columbus on Sunday.
The win pushed OSU to 2-1 on the season with both victories coming against top 25 programs.
"This was a good win to close out the weekend," OSU head coach Chris Young said. "We didn't play our best tennis today, but we competed well and that is the most important thing for us as the season goes. Being short handed we were able to play some girls at new positions and I liked the way they competed in doing so. That should give them a lot of confidence moving forward."
The match began with doubles, where the Cowgirls controlled all three matches over LSU. OSU never trailed in any of the three matches. Tied up at three, Cowgirls Mhai Sawankgaew and Martina Zerulo dominated the last three games on the way to giving OSU the advantage with a 6-3 victory over Nina Geissler and Maggie Cubitt.Â
Ayumi Miyamoto and Sofia Rojas started strong and remained steady throughout the match as they took down the Tiger duo of Rania Azziz and Safiya Carrington, 6-4, to earn the doubles-clinching point. Oona Orpana and Dariya Detkovskaya were tied at 4 apiece with Taylor Bridges and Mia Rabinowitz and were closing in on taking a 5-4 lead when the match was called.
Singles matches were played until the Cowgirls reached four points. Oklahoma State's momentum carried right into singles play. OSU led 2-0 lead after LSU defaulted on court six.Â
Sofia Rojas closed out her big day with a hard-fought victory. After dominating the first set, 6-3, Rojas battled to win a tight second set, 7-6 (9-7), to give the Cowgirls a 3-0 lead.Â
Martina Zerulo fell behind early, facing a 2-0 deficit in set one, before rattling off six-straight games on the way to a, 6-2, 6-4, victory in straight sets over Taylor Bridges for the clinching point.Â
Mhai Sawangkaew closed the match strong after dropping set one, she battled back and took set two. Sawangkaew held a 4-0 lead in the third set and had won five-straight games when her match was called at 4-6, 6-3, 4-0, against No. 54 Safiya Carrington.
Ayumi Miyamoto led 1-0 in the third set when her match was called. Oona Orpana was in a tightly contested third-set match when her match was stopped.Â
The Cowgirls will be back in action Thursday at 6 p.m. against Missouri at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
