Sawangkaew and Orpana Advance To Singles Quarterfinals At Freeman Memorial Tournament

LAS VEGAS – Oklahoma State's Mhai Sawangkaew and Oona Orpana advanced to tomorrow's quarterfinal round at the 19th Annual Freeman Memorial Women's Tennis Championships at the Fertitta Tennis Complex at UNLV.
"I saw a lot of great things from our girls today, highlighted by our freshmen," head coach Chris Young said. "All three played well today in their first spring event. The level here this weekend is very high and will help us be prepared for what is to come next week when we start dual matches."
Mhai Sawangkaew, Martina Zerulo, Dariya Detkovskaya, Oona Orpana and Sofia Rojas each competed.
Mhai Sawangkaew picked up a big-time victory, taking down Pepperdine's No. 93 Janice Tjen, 6-0, 3-6, 7-6 (5). Sawangkaew took down No. 49 Sasha Vagramov of UCLA in dominating fashion, winning, 6-4, 6-4.
Oona Orpana joined Sawangkaew in the quarterfinals after routing Florida's Carly Briggs, 6-4, 6-3.
Sofia Rojas added another Cowgirl victory defeating UNLV's Molly Helgelsson, 6-4, 6-4. Rojas was defeated by No. 31 Shiori Fukuda of Pepperdine, 6-3, 6-1.
Martina Zerulo dropped her match to Florida's McCartney Kessler, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, and Dariya Detkovskaya lost to Connie Ma of Stanford, 6-3, 6-1.
Both Cowgirl doubles team's lost in hard-fought matches. Mhai Sawangkaew and Martina Zerulo teamed up and were defeated by Pepperdine's duo of Shiori Fukuda and Nikki Redelijk, 6-4. Sofia Rojas and Oona Orpnana fell to Stanford's Angelica Blake and Connie Ma, 6-4.
The action begins with doubles tomorrow at 10 a.m. PST, 12 p.m. (CST).
