Tay Martin Moves Through Hurricane Ida Woes with Big Performance Against Missouri State
September 08, 2021 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – The first game of the season always presents unique challenges, but for Tay Martin this weekend's bout versus Missouri State meant something more.
Martin, a Houma, Louisiana native, spent the last week worrying about more than the season opener. A little over a week ago, Martin's family sought shelter from Hurricane Ida and evacuated to Houston to stay with his aunt and uncle.
"I'm just glad they're safe," he said. "It's a tough deal but we'll get through it, we always do."
Saturday night's game proved to be a welcome distraction for Martin's family. For a few hours they were able to escape reality and just watch him play.
"They texted me all through the game, told me they love me, and I did a good job," he said. "I was grateful for that as well, made me feel good."
Martin is no rookie when it comes to hurricanes and despite the uncertainty, he let his family be his motivation.
"I've been through a lot of hurricanes," he said. "But it's just one of those things, we're relentless out there in Louisiana, it's sad but we get through it as a family."
After playing behind All-American Tylan Wallace and always reliable Dillon Stoner, Tay Martin is poised to have a standout senior season.
Martin had six receptions for 107 yards in the Cowboys 23-16 win over Missouri State on Saturday, and it might just be a small preview of what's to come.
