September 29, 2021 | Cowboy Football
On Saturday, members of the 2011 Cowboy football team will be honored during Oklahoma State's top-25 showdown against No. 21 Baylor.
The 2011 team finished 12-1 on the year with the highest AP ranked finish in program history at third. The Pokes were Big 12 Champions and finished off the historic season in a thrilling 41-38 over-time win over No. 4 Stanford in the Fiesta Bowl .
A major part of the success of the 2011 team comes from the NFL caliber talent that filled the roster.
Quarterback Brandon Weeden had a storied career at Oklahoma State. The 2010 first-team All-Big 12 selection was drafted 22nd overall by the Cleveland Browns. Weeden spent a season as the starter in Cleveland before serving as the backup for the Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans and Tennessee Titans.
Weeden still holds the individual school record for passes attempted, completed, passing touchdowns and completion percentage.
Out wide for Weeden and the Pokes was two-time Biletnikoff Award winner Justin Blackmon. The two-time unanimous All-American and 2010 Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year was drafted fifth overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2012.
Blackmon holds the individual school record for receptions, receiving yards, receiving touchdowns and receptions per game. In addition, Blackmon remains atop the OSU record for consecutive games with a touchdown catch and games with 100 or more receiving yards at 12.
The third first-round pick from the 2011 team was cornerback Justin Gilbert who was selected by the Cleveland Browns with the eighth pick in 2014. A sophomore in 2011, Gilbert had five interceptions and was a special teams weapon who returned two kickoff returns for touchdowns. Along with his two-time All-Big 12 selections, he was a unanimous All-American and Jim Thorpe Award finalist in 2013 and was the defensive MVP of the 2012 Fiesta Bowl. He spent three seasons in the NFL playing for the Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers.
Fellow defensive back Markelle Martin was both drafted in the sixth round by the Tennessee Titans in 2012. Martin led the secondary in 2011 as a first-team All-Big 12 selection and All-American.
Other members of the 2011 roster that played in the NFL include 2011 conscious All-American Levy Adcock, who signed with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent offensive lineman. In addition, former 2011 first-team All-Big 12 defensive tackle Jamie Blatnick signed to the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent. Blatnick spent the 2013 season in Buffalo.
Other Cowboys from the 2011 roster that spent time in the NFL include Nick Martinez, Josh Cooper, Andrew Mitchell, Johnny Thomas, Orie Lemon, Hubert Anyiam, Joseph Randle, Alex Elkins, Shaun Lewis and Daytawion Lowe.
