Cowgirl Tennis Opens Play at Milwaukee Classic

MILWAUKEE—Oklahoma State's Martina Zerulo and Sofia Rojas are representing the Cowgirl tennis team in the 45th edition of the Milwaukee Tennis Classic this weekend, opening play on Saturday.

Saturday afternoon marked the Cowgirl debut for both players, who started with doubles play. Zerulo and Rojas took down Naomi Cheong and Gabrielle Lee of USC, 6-4, to advance to the quarterfinals tomorrow.

In singles play, Zerulo picked up her first win as a Cowgirl after defeating Wisconsin's Ava Markham in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. The victory marked Zerulo's first collegiate triumph in over a year after sitting out last season.

Rojas dropped her match to Xinyu Cai of Wisconsin, 6-0, 6-2.

Later in the day, Zerulo was defeated by USC's Naomi Cheong, 7-6, 6-1, before Sofia Rojas dropped her consolation match to USC's Grace Piper, 6-1, 7-6.

Both Cowgirls will be back in action tomorrow starting with the doubles quarterfinals at 8 a.m.
