OSU’s Kelsey Ramirez Already Making a Difference
September 15, 2021 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER — Just four months ago, Oklahoma State's Kelsey Ramirez was competing for Stephen F. Austin University in Texas. Now, she has taken her talents to Stillwater, where she finished second in her first race as a Cowgirl and has already broken one of her personal records.
In the Cowboy Preview on Sept. 1, Ramirez led the Cowgirls to a victory, finishing second in the 3K with a personal-best time of 10:56.5. It was her first appearance in a Cowgirl uniform, but she's already making her mark on the team.
Ramirez followed in her aunt's footsteps by running cross country at SFA, just like her aunt did for four years. Ramirez competed at SFA from 2017-2021, winning multiple championships and awards, including Southland Conference Freshman of the Year and the Most Valuable Player in the SLC. With her team, she helped lead them to multiple championships, winning the outdoor championship in 2019 and 2021, and the indoor championship in 2019 and 2020.
"My aunt is my hometown high school's track and cross country coach," Ramirez said. "She also coaches a summer track camp, so ever since I was three years old, I'd be out there running drills. Once I got a little older, I started to take it a little more serious and she was out there to help me and guide me through that process in high school."
Before competing at SFA, Ramirez was a star at La Porte High School in La Porte, Texas, where she lettered all four years and set a school record in the 1600m. After finishing her junior year of college as an SLC indoor champion, Ramirez transferred to OSU for her final year of eligibility.
"(Moving to OSU) has been different but in a really good way," Ramirez said. "There's more girls to train with and the team is bigger, it's been a really good transition so far."
Even though the team and competition for places here in Stillwater is bigger, Ramirez is still making her presence felt. She has already broken her personal record in the 3K and has her eye on more hardware this season at OSU.
"We didn't have our full team at the opener," Ramirez said. "So, we'll get to see how the whole team is looking at the next meet and I hope I place top five."
Ramirez will be back in action this weekend, as both the Cowboy and Cowgirl cross country teams host the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater on Saturday, Sept. 18.
