OKLAHOMA STATE QUOTES
Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy
Opening statement:
"There was really good defensive football played today. I was proud of our defense for continuing to put us in a great situation and were good on third downs again. They continue to play well as we try to grow up on offense and get some young players developed to work through a few things. We need to come together as coaches and make a decision on who we are offensively right now with our personnel and what direction to go to give us the best chance to score more points."
On LD Brown's kickoff return:
"It was right in front of me, so I had a good view of it. Kanion Williams blocked his guy for about 50 yards in space, which was pretty impressive. He's been a really good special teams player for us for a while. This changed the game and gave us a little bit of juice."
On improving the run game:
"We need to execute better. Whatever philosophies we come up with we need to block it and be physical. The backs have to run through a tackle and make a guy miss, which is all part of recruiting. The point is we need to get sound scheme wise and then better techniques."
On Jason Taylor II:
"He was good. Jason makes a lot of plays for some reason. He's always around the ball and does a good job. He's just one of those guys you can trust."
On the impact Christian Holmes had in the game:
"The play he made over the middle of the field in man coverage on third-and-six, or whatever it was when he jumped over the top. He was way up there. It looked like a 40-something inch vertical to me. The two-point play was big to get that ball and strip it out. Our approach offensively changes if it's a field-goal game. He made a couple big plays."
Oklahoma State coordinator Kasey Dunn
On Jaylen Warren's touchdown:
"Fabulous. Zig zagged three or four times, ran a couple guys over. He just fell from the end zone, and it was perfect. Exactly what we want from him. He's shown that through fall camp and he showed it again today on the field. He deserves the carries he's getting. He's playing well for us. Still, we didn't run the ball effectively, not effectively enough, but better. We're making improvements and they're up there battling. When you go into the locker room right now, there's a bunch of exhausted guys and that's what you want to see.
On what more they can do offensively…
"I don't know, that's a tough one. I think it's more just a matter of fundamentals, probably repping the youth.
You know we do have some new faces in there. Jaylen (Warren) getting his, even though he is a senior, knew our system. He's just getting better as we go. It's part of trying to suit the scheme, the overall offensive scheme to who we have playing. Beginning of the week, it was far different from what you just saw."
Oklahoma State coordinator Jim Knowles
On Malcolm Rodriguez:
"He's making me look good. That's what I tell him before the game and after it 'I'm glad you're here with me and go out and make me look good.' We work really well together. He's almost like a son to me. He knows the scheme and knows how I think, and I do my best to put him in situations where he can see the play and react to it because he's a guy that gets people on the ground."
On his relationship with Rodriguez:
"He's been with me since I got here and he's played both safety and linebacker, so he's able to see the big picture. We've spent a lot of time together and he's a smart kid so I can throw a lot at him and he picks it up. He's become like a graduate student for me if I were a professor."
On a new defensive look with four defensive ends:
"I think it's a good change up to get some speed on the field. Joe Bob and Greg Richmond do a great job of mixing it up and it gives us a lot of flexibility and allows us to get pressure on the offensive line."
Oklahoma State's Spencer Sanders
On evaluating himself:
"I think everyone in this building will tell me I played good, but I have to be honest with myself and play better. I need to play better for this team and Coach Gundy. I can't hang my head. We have four true freshmen out there and they did great. We had a couple of misses here and there."
On what he means about playing better:
"Just better balls. Part of it is on me, it's one of my duties. I can't hang my head, we had four freshmen out there that played great. We had a few missed assignments out there but it's nothing we can't fix."
On the freshmen:
"Really, honestly it's better for them. It builds confidence for them. They need to tell themselves they can do it; we can do it. I tell them all the time throughout practice you're talented, you can do this, you were recruited to be here, you deserve to be a college athlete so just got out there and do it."
On the freshmen dropping passes:
"Well, this game is a perfect example. We had a couple of dropped passes. It's a part of the game. It's football. Not everyone is going to be pretty, not everyone is going to be ugly. After a drop, I would go over and tell them, 'hey get another possession and there is still plenty of game left.'"
Oklahoma State's Christian Holmes
On his "spider-man" play:
"Just a look we've seen a lot through this week. We had to change it up a bit."
On breaking up the two-point conversion:
"That was just another play. Just being a better guy and seeing what the offense is going to give you. Being a cornerback, you always have to make a play."
Oklahoma State's LD Brown
On the kick-run:
"Like I've been telling everyone, shout out to Kanion Williams. Before we got out into the huddle, Coach Watts had drawn it up. I saw the crease and I hit it. I was blocked by everyone doing their jobs and their one-on-one and I took it home."
On what he was thinking during the play:
"Don't miss it. Just take what they give you and see where the ball is going to land. I knew I had to get to the left side of the field very fast and I saw it was open. I saw the holes and I hit them. After that everyone got their block. Like Tyler (Lacy) said, I wouldn't have heard the end of it if I got blocked by the kicker. We scored, for the first time since 2014 since Tyreek Hill, it's an honor to be in the conversation with him as well. I'm hoping we can keep it going."
On his teammates' reactions:
"It was crazy man. I saw everyone jumping on the sidelines. It was a momentum play, after going down 17-14 obviously we were in the fourth quarter."
Oklahoma State's Malcolm Rodriguez
On leading the defense in tackles:
"Just the play calling by Coach Knowles and him putting us in the right position. He tells us to always run after the ball and getting my hat in there."
On Christian Holmes:
"He played lights out and had a good two-point stop. He's tough guy, he's a talker that's for sure."
On Devin:
"He's a leader. He's a physical guy and gets banged up every once in a while, and the guys have to step up. We try to do our best and bring our energy up."
On the freshmen receivers:
"To have them make a play for us was huge. We needed a little bit of improvement to try and get it going and they stepped up at the perfect time. You know, Jaden made huge catches on third down, obviously the touchdown was special and so was Bryson Green with his touchdown. I just cannot be happier for those kids."
On freshmen playing due to injuries:
"It's not something that is easy on my end. You've got a bunch of guys running around out there and knowing that just at any moment there could be some sort of disaster, you know. And the line was an issue, dropped passes, broken assignments, any of those things can happen when you have a true freshman out there playing. And you know they just haven't been repping out there either. They haven't been in that position. Repping as starters you know, and all of a sudden they're there."
TULSA QUOTES
Tulsa head coach Philip Montgomery
Opening Statement:
"Tough game. I thought we battled extremely hard. I'm very proud of the effort that our guys played with. Last couple of years, this [game] has come down to the wire every time. We definitely had our opportunities, a couple calls or plays go our way and I think we come out of here with a win."
On the slow start:
"I thought Davis (Brin) played a better game today. We've got to start better than what we did, but it's a defensive battle. There were two really good defenses going after each other. I thought in the second half, offensively we went out and established some things and got some things going and obviously it helped us. But we've got to come out and play the first half like we did the second."
On the LD Brown kickoff return:
"That's a huge play in the game, obviously. We had just come down and scored. I think we had some guys there. My field view of it, there might have been some missed calls on that play, but we've got to get off of those things and go make tackles. We've still got to go make the play and get him on the ground and give our defense a chance."
Tulsa quarterback David Brin
On how comfortable he felt after the first game:
"Yeah, I definitely feel like I played more like myself today. Saw the field pretty clear, we just got to fight and that's what we were doing. So, you know, we're going to get better every week."
On his improvement from week 1 to week 2 and getting back to playing like himself:
"Right, just to learn from it and move on and that game was over with and there was nothing we could do about it. We just wanted to come out and attack and start fast and we needed to start a little faster today."
On playing in the atmosphere of a Big 12 team:
"Yeah, you know it was a good atmosphere but at the end of the day it's 100 yards and that's all the green I see. It was a good atmosphere and yeah I had fun."
On scrambling out of the pocket:
"Yeah, I did use my feet a little bit more today, but I only do that when I have to. I'd rather give the ball to someone who moves a little bit better than me (receivers)."
On the way the team responded following the opener:
"I thought we fought really well today. That's the culture we have here - that we're going to fight until the clock hits zero. I was definitely proud of that but like I said, we just have to start faster."
Tulsa safety Bryson Powers
On what it's like to be in a defensive-minded game:
"Yeah, we were just talking about it in the locker room. We gave up 21 points on defense today, and for us that's more than what we want to give up. Of course, we want to give up zero points every time we play, but we knew we were playing a really good offense. We were frustrated with our tackling today and we're going to work on that in practice this week. But hopefully we never give up that many points again this year."
On how he's feeling after the loss:
"I mean yeah, this one hurt and we're definitely going to have to have a short memory for sure. This is my third time playing OSU here, and every time it's been a hard-fought game. It's great getting to come over here and play them every year and it's frustrating playing a team so close and not being able to pull it out. But we're going to have to have a short memory for sure and focus on next week."
On if Tulsa played close to their best today:
"Yeah, we definitely played better today, but we haven't played to our best yet."
Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy
