Mike Gundy Enters His 17th Season
August 30, 2021 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – As Mike Gundy begins his 17th season in charge of the Oklahoma State football program, he has the Cowboys in a familiar position – inside the top-25.
Ranked No. 22 in the preseason edition of the 2021 USA Today AFCA Coaches Poll, it marks the eighth time in the past 11 years OSU has found its name in the preseason rankings. The Cowboys have also reached the top 15 of the AP poll at some point in 11 of the past 13 seasons under Gundy.
Since Gundy took over in 2005, OSU has won 67.2% of its games, after winning only 49.1% in its history before. His 137 wins as head coach is by far the most in OSU history and ranks fifth in wins by active coaches at their current school.
The Oklahoma State program took off under Gundy in the 2010s. The 2011 season for the Cowboys was one for the history books as they won the Big 12 Championship and the Fiesta Bowl, finishing third in the final AP rankings, while Gundy was named the National Coach of the Year.
Continuing with his decade of success, OSU has had six seasons with at least 10 wins and is one of seven schools to post a winning record every season since 2010. OSU's 101 wins since 2010 is the 12th most among FBS schools.
Gundy has led the Cowboys to 15 consecutive bowl games, which is the seventh-longest streak in the nation. To put that into perspective, before Mike Gundy was named head coach, OSU had 16 bowl appearances in its 104-year history.
After getting as high as No. 6 in the AP poll in 2020, a veteran OSU squad will look to join the race for the Big 12 Championship in Gundy's 17th season at the helm.
