August 20, 2021 | Cowboy Wrestling
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame announced its 2021 class on Friday morning and includes four members with ties to the Oklahoma State wrestling program.
Hardell Moore, Dave Martin and Gerald Winnard will be recognized with the Lifetime Service to Wrestling award, which is presented to coaches, officials and contributors who have given a minimum of 20 years of service to the sport of wrestling. Former Cowboy, Rear Admiral William J. McDaniel will be presented with the Outstanding American award as an individual who has used the disciplines of wrestling to launch a notable career in other walks of life.
Moore was a two-time All-American at Oklahoma State, including a national runner-up finish in 1998. He completed his collegiate career with a record of 101-30 and ranks No. 13 in program history with 62 dual wins.
Since leaving Stillwater, Moore has founded the Oklahoma Wrestling Academy, which trains some of the best young wrestlers in the state. In 2003 and 2004, Moore was a member of the Oklahoma National Team coaching staff, returned to the staff in 2012 and has since become the coaching director in 2018. Earlier this year, he was named the 2021 National Freestyle Developmental Coach of the Year and was the recipient of the 2016 Gallagher Award for his service to the wrestling community.
An individual national champion in 1970 while competing for Iowa State, Dave Martin made his impact at Oklahoma State later on serving multiple different roles in the athletics department. Martin directly oversaw wrestling while serving 34 years as a senior administrator at OSU. He spent time as an assistant coach for the Cowboys from 1975-78 and acted as the interim head coach in 1992, leading the team to a Big Eight title and second-place finish at the NCAA Championships.
Martin also completed short stints as the interim athletic director and interim commissioner of the Big 12 Conference. He was a member of the National Wrestling Rules and Championship Committee for two four year periods from 1998-2002 and 2010-14, acting as chairman for three of those years each time.
Winnard was a 1970 Big Eight Champion for Oklahoma State and was a contributing member of the 1968 and 1971 NCAA championship teams. He moved from wrestling on the mat into the coaching world beginning his career in 1979 at Plainview High School in Ardmore, before serving stints at Davis High School and Ardmore High School.
McDaniel lettered two years for Oklahoma State, was a five-time Navy wrestling champion and competed in the United States Olympic Trials in 1968. Following his wrestling career, he was team physician for the United States wrestling team at the 1984 Olympics and remained involved in Olympic medical care through 2000. Yet his most important contributions came off the mat where he was a 32-year naval veteran. He led relief efforts in Indonesia after a tsunami in 2005 and was also a part of Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.
The Class of 2021 will be honored at the Hilton Garden Inn in Edmond on Oct. 10. A reception will be conducted at 3 p.m. followed by a banquet at 4 p.m. and the induction ceremony at 5 p.m. The four Cowboys are joined by classmates Mike Clevenger, Vance Conallis, Donald Keith, Richard Morris and Robert Park.
