Birmingham Claims Second Career Cowgirl Record at Arkansas Twilight
May 07, 2021 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Oklahoma State track and field team competed for the final time of the outdoor regular season at the Arkansas Twilight hosted at Arkansas, and its most impressive performance was a school record race from sprint specialist Aaliyah Birmingham in the women's 100 meter prelim.
The Tulsa-transfer has made her presence felt – both with her Oklahoma State teammates and among the best in the country – in the two years she's competed in the orange and black. She added to her OSU legacy yet again in today's competition, claiming the Cowgirls record in the 100 meter dash. The 11.31 school-record pace came in the preliminary sections of the women's 100 meters, where she finished third overall.
"[Aaliyah] Birmingham came out today and showed up," assistant sprints coach Anthony Diaz said. "With her consistent training and her ability to rise up to big time competition, she is on a path to be the best sprinter that's ever competed at Oklahoma State."
Birmingham went on to race even faster in the final section of the event, finishing runner-up in 11.26. but an official wind reading of 3.2 meters per second invalidates the time for records and top lists.
In the final regular season outdoor meet, a number of other student-athletes put up noteworthy performances.
The women's high jump ended with a pair of multis Cowgirls top finishers. Bailey Golden earned the event win with a 1.70m leap and freshman Maddie Meiner took runner-up with a final mark of 1.65m.
Taylor Roe continued her outstanding second year at OSU with the first outdoor individual event win of her career; the freshman claimed the 3,000 meter steeplechase title in a time of 10:19.59. The pace ranks fifth all-time for the Cowgirls and fourth in the Big 12 this season.
Freshman thrower Sam Mason improved upon his career best in the hammer throw, tabbing a 48.61m mark that earned him the fifth-place finish.
The Cowgirls throws athletes took Mason's lead; Hannah Bradford and Erin Talbott both finished in the top 10 of the women's discus throw. Bradford earned the runner-up finish with a 42.13m throw, while Talbott finished sixth with her mark of 36.57m.
In the men's 1,500 meters, OSU totaled five top-ten finishers led across the finish line by Isaiah Priddey in the runner up spot in 3:47.18. Alex Stitt (3:47.75) finished right behind in the third, Sukhi Khosla (3:50.54) claimed the fourth-place finish, while Chris Middleton-Pearson and Alec Haines rounded out the group in seventh and 10th place, respectively.
As the outdoor regular season comes to a close, the Pokes will get back to Stillwater and gear up for the Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championship hosted at Kansas State from May 14-16.
