Kehl Bests Own Program Record in First Day at Texas Invite
April 30, 2021 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
AUSTIN, Texas – In the first of two days of outdoor competition from Mike A. Myers Stadium, the Pokes' best performance was a school-record throw from Kelsey Kehl in the women's javelin.
Kehl improved upon the previous program-best, 47.94m mark she set earlier this season at the Sooner Invitational with her fourth-attempt throw that measured 50.57m. The throw is an all-time career best for the Washington State-transfer and currently ranks second in the Big 12 and 15th in the West Region this season.
"This was a big mental breakthrough for Kelsey today," multis coach Josh Langley said. "It's a big thing to crack the 50-meter-mark for the first time and she did it 3 times today. She's come a long way since her injury freshman year and has dealt with a lot of adversity recently. I could not be prouder of her and we're looking forward for more to come."
Joining Kehl as a top-five finisher in the women's javelin, Bailey Golden threw for a huge personal best of her own: 41.06m mark. The multis Cowgirl improved upon her former career best – 37.04m – by more than four meters.
In the men's 1,500 meters, a total of five Cowboy racers claimed top-10 finishes and each of them finished in career best times. Isaiah Priddey (3:44.12) paced the Cowboys and took the runner-up finish. Garrett Calhoun (3:44.60) finished right behind in third place, Alex Stitt (3:44.88) took fourth, Kian Davis (3:46.82) ended the race in fifth and Chris Middleton Pearson (3:48.15) rounded out the top-10 Cowboys with the sixth-place finish.
In the men's discus throw, Cowboy veteran Torrey Hickel recorded his fourth-consecutive top-ten finish in the event this season with his 6th-attempt mark of 50.39m, which earned him fifth place on the day. Multis athlete Jake Dyer also tabbed a top-ten finish, ending the event in 10th-place with a 38.52m throw.
After a rainy day one in Austin that caused numerous delays and schedule changes, the Pokes will be back at it again from Mike A. Myers Stadium for the second and final day of competition. A revised schedule will be released as soon as it is made available.
