Multis Athletes In Form After Day One From Sooner Invite
April 16, 2021 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
NORMAN, Okla. – In their return to the outdoor multis event competition, Oklahoma State's multis athletes posted a number of impressive performances in the first of two days from the Sooner Invitational.
While they spent the first portion of the outdoor season competing in individual events, OSU's multis athletes returned to the women's heptathlon and men's decathlon for the first time since 2019. Although their return was less than glamorous – featuring overcast skies, on-and-off rain and an unusual April cold front – the Pokes made the most of their first day in Norman.
Leading the Cowboys in day one, William Edmonds was firing on all cylinders from the start, earning the event title in 100 meters in a career best 11.00 pace to open up competition. Edmonds led the Cowboys through the long jump shortly after, finishing runner up with final mark of 6.58m.
In the shot put, Jake Dyer took over as the leading Cowboy, earning the event win with a 13.45m throw, a season best for the junior. In the high jump is when Max Braht shined brightest: the All-Big 12 indoor honoree finished third with a personal best 1.89m mark.
At the end of the first five events of the pentathlon, Edmonds and Braht earned the multis Cowboys' 10th and 11th top-five finishes of the day in the 400 meters. Through day one, Edmonds, totaling 3,645 points, sits in third overall with Dyer right behind him in fourth with 3,484 points; Braht trails closely in sixth with 3,384 points.
In the heptathlon, multis standout Bailey Golden led the Cowgirls all day, finishing every event of the first four in sixth place or better. Her best mark included a personal best 14.17 in the 100 meter hurdles that earned her the runner-up finish.
Cowgirl freshman Maddie Meiner tailed Golden closely for most of the day and the two of them sit in the top-10 in the overall standings after day one. With Golden just 50 points out of first with 3,284 points and Meiner in sixth, totaling 3,131 points, the Cowgirls are set to close out the heptathlon well tomorrow.
"I'm pretty excited about their first day back, especially Bailey [Golden] and Will [Edmonds]," multis coach Josh Langley said. "It was good to see them all come out in far-from-favorable conditions and perform pretty well. That height for Bailey in the high jump, she hasn't cleared that since senior year of high school. Definitely excited to see them trending in the right direction. All three guys set new personal records in the high jump which is huge. Just have to get them rested and recovered for tomorrow and try to finish this thing out."
Aside from the multis events, the Pokes performed well across the board.
In the women's hammer throw, Hannah Bradford posted a top-ten finish with a 47.38m throw while Johnna Orange threw a career best 38.25m.
Claire Workman tabbed a top-five finish in the women's 5,000 meters with a personal best pace 18:36.53.
Torrey Hickel and Michael Releford both braved the dreary conditions and competed well in the men's shot put, both finishing in the top ten. Hickel ended the day in fourth with a 17.02m throw and Releford finished in eighth place with a 16.51m mark.
A well-rounded group of Cowgirl jumpers competed together in the women's long jump. Freshman Sanye Ford led the way for the female jump unit, tabbing a fourth-place finish and a personal best 5.88m jump. Ryan Roane joined Ford in the top ten with a final jump of 5.56m.
Oklahoma State will have athletes compete in a pair of meets tomorrow to close out the weekend. While the field event specialists will finish day two Sooner Invitational, OSU's sprints unit will appear at the Michael Johnson Classic in Waco, Texas.
