Hakanen Tallies Second Consecutive Individual Win at North Texas Classic
April 10, 2021 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
DENTON, Texas – In a field event focused day of competition for Oklahoma State at the North Texas Classic, Saara Hakanen's second consecutive event win highlighted a number of impressive performances from the North Texas Soccer and Track & Field Stadium.
After her first event win of the outdoor season in the triple jump last week, Hakanen added another individual title to her outdoor resume with a 1.75m first-place height in the women's high jump. The mark is the fourth best in school history and currently ranks third in the Big 12 this season.
Along with Hakanen's success, a talented group of Oklahoma State's field athletes put up strong numbers throughout the day.
In the pole vault, senior Elissa Ray's career best 3.95m height earned her the runner-up finish. The mark moves her name up a spot in the OSU record books to second best ever by a Cowgirl in the event.
In the men's shot put, it was once again senior Torrey Hickel leading the way for OSU. His fourth-place, 17.15m mark lead the Cowboys in the event. Michael Releford and Patrick Michaels joined their teammate in the top 10, posting sixth and ninth-place finishes, respectively.
Hickel paired his fourth-place finish in the shot put with another top-10 performance in the discus throw. His 45.92m toss earned him a sixth-place finish. Freshman Sam Mason also tabbed a top-10 mark; he placed 10th with a 42.65m throw.
The women's discus throw was just as noteworthy for the Cowgirls. Hannah Bradford threw for a career best 45.55m, a mark that earned her sixth place. Freshman Erin Talbott finished with a career best of her own: a 41.91 throw that placed her eighth in the event.
Bradford, along with Hickel, finished the day with a pair of top-10 marks. Her second came in the hammer throw, where she placed eighth with a 44.40m mark.
As the Pokes return to Stillwater, they'll look ahead to next week where they'll divide and conquer again in a pair of away meets: the Michael Johnson Classic hosted by Baylor and the John Jacobs Invitational hosted by in-state rival Oklahoma.
