Cowboy Baseball Holds Off UNCW In Opener

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State jumped out to an early lead and held on late for a victory in its series opener with UNCW as the 11th-ranked Cowboys claimed a 7-6 win in the first game of a split doubleheader Saturday at O'Brate Stadium.
With the win, the Cowboys improved to 19-7-1, while the Seahawks fell to 15-10.
Parker Scott impressed once again as the southpaw improved to 6-1 on the season by tossing seven shutout innings and allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out eight.
Max Hewitt and Carson McCusker each delivered two-run home runs in the first inning as OSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead.
The Pokes extended that lead in the fifth, plating three runs in the inning. Christian Encarnacion-Strand ripped a bases-loaded double down the left-field line to bring home a pair of runs, and Justin Campbell followed with a sacrifice fly to make the score 7-0.
That score remained until the eighth when Zach Cable surrendered a solo home run to Taber Mongero for the Seahawks' first run.
The visitors made things interesting in the ninth, loading the bases with no outs against Cable after a single and two walks to bring Brett Standlee out of the OSU bullpen.
Four of the first five batters to face Standlee singled to cut the Cowboys' lead to 7-6 with one out and runners on the corners. But a fly out to shallow right field and a pop up ended the game.
