Spring Preview: Offensive Line
March 25, 2021 | Cowboy Football
Even with the loss of NFL-bound Teven Jenkins and multiple-year starter Ry Schneider, the experience on the offensive line should be more than adequate heading into 2021.
Three starters return, led by redshirt senior All-Big 12 pick Josh Sills – the lone returning Cowboy who started all 11 games on offense last year. His primary position is left guard, but injuries across the line forced him out of his preferred spot for half of the 2020 season. The situation provided valuable experience for Sills and, combined with his role as vocal leader in the locker room, helped cement him as one of the key members of the team heading into 2021.
The other two starters from last year's team are Hunter Woodard, who started the final 10 games at right guard as a redshirt sophomore, and former walk-on Jake Springfield, who started nine times at left tackle as a redshirt freshman.
Although those are the main pieces of last year's line, several more return with meaningful experience, and all should compete for a spot in the starting lineup. Cole Birmingham and Hunter Anthony were starters on the right side of the line before injuries forced them out of the season opener, and Preston Wilson earned four starts while filling in during the course of the season.
Transfer center Danny Godlevske also joins the team this spring and looks to claim a starting role after earning three all-MAC honors at Miami (OH).
Several others look to compete for spots on the depth chart, including Eli Russ, Taylor Miterko Joe Michalski, Monroe Mills, Cade Bennett, Jake Henry and Tyrese Williams. Freshman Silas Barr also arrives after enrolling early for the spring.
