LUBBOCK, Texas – Oklahoma State came out on the winning side of a pitcher's duel in Friday night's Big 12 Conference opener at Rip Griffin Park as the ninth-ranked Cowboys topped No. 4 Texas Tech, 2-0, behind the pitching of Parker Scott and Brett Standlee.
In posting its fifth shutout of the season, OSU improved to 12-3-1 on the season and snapped the Red Raiders' 14-game winning streak and 23-game home winning streak.
Friday's game also marked the first time TTU has been shut out at home since March 29, 2018, when they fell 1-0 to West Virginia.
Scott was magnificent in the starting role, tying a career high by working seven innings and improving to 4-1 on the season. The southpaw racked up nine strikeouts and allowed just six hits and one walk.
Standlee was equally as impressive, picking up his third save of the year by tossing two hitless innings while striking out three.
The Cowboys managed just three hits in the contest and scored the only runs they would need in the fifth inning.
In that decisive inning, Nolan McLean collected OSU's first hit of the contest with a one-out double, and Caeden Trenkle then reached on catcher's interference.
After a groundout moved both runners into scoring position with two outs, Noah Sifrit stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter and delivered a high chopper just past the pitcher's mound. The speedy Sifrit beat the third baseman's throw for an infield single as OSU plated its first run.
The Pokes doubled their lead to 2-0 when they executed a double steal with Trenkle sliding safely into home.
TTU (14-4) mounted several scoring threats but to no avail.
With the bases loaded and one out in the third, McLean made a great defensive play as he barehanded a short grounder and threw home for the force out. Scott then struck out Braxton Fulford to end the inning.
In the eighth, back-to-back singles by Dru Baker and Jace Jung to open the inning knocked Scott from the game. Standlee came out of the bullpen and retired the first two batters on a pop up and strikeout before a walk loaded the bases. But Standlee got Fulford to foul out to end the threat.
The Red Raiders also brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth after a throwing error with two outs. But OSU secured the win on a nice play by shortstop Hueston Morrill as he slid to his left to field a grounder up the middle and flipped to second for the final out.
The two teams return to action Saturday at 2 p.m.
