Cade Cunningham Named To Cousy Award Final Five
February 22, 2021 | Cowboy Basketball
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State star Cade Cunningham was named one of five finalists for the 2021 Bob Cousy Award, which is given annually to the nation's top point guard by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Cunningham's size, vision and athleticism make him the ultimate stat-stuffer and a true generational talent. According to Stats Perform (formerly Stats Inc.), only four other power conference players over the last 20 seasons can match his all-around stat line of 18.6 points (2nd nationally among freshmen), 6.1 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.0 blocks per game - and none of those players can match Cunningham's 3-point clip of 44.6 percent - the 5th best mark in OSU history.
Cunningham already owns a league-high six Big 12 weekly awards (five Newcomer of the Week and one Player of the Week), and he was named to the Wooden Award Midseason Top-25 and the 2021 Naismith Trophy watch list as well.
On top of Cunningham, the four other finalists for the 2021 Bob Cousy Award are Jared Butler (Baylor), Jalen Suggs (Gonzaga), Ayo Dosunmu (Illinois) and Collin Gillespie (Villanova).
A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 student-athletes that was released in November, which was narrowed to 10 candidates in January and now just five finalists. The finalists will be presented to Mr. Cousy and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. The winner will be presented on April 9.
Cunningham is looking to become the first OSU player to win the Cousy Award, although former Cowboy All-Americans Jawun Evans (2017 watch list) and Marcus Smart (2013 finalist, 2014 watch list) were on the radar.
Now in its 18th year, the award is named for the 1971 Naismith Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic and Holy Cross guard who won the 1947 NCAA Championship and was named a Consensus First-Team All-American in 1950. Cousy's success continued at the professional level as a six-time NBA Champion and the 1957 NBA Most Valuable Player.
Cunningham and the Cowboys will host No. 15 Texas Tech on Monday night in Gallagher-Iba Arena. Tipoff is slated for 8 p.m. on ESPN's Big Monday showcase.
