Cunningham Named To Naismith Trophy Midseason Team
February 11, 2021 | Cowboy Basketball
STILLWATER - The Atlanta Tipoff Club announced that Oklahoma State's Cade Cunningham was one of 30 players selected to the 2021 Naismith Trophy Midseason Team.
Cunningham is a four-time winner of the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week award, and leads the Big 12 in scoring with 18.7 points per game. In the last 20 years of college basketball, only four other power-conference players can claim Cunningham's all-around stat line of 6.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.0 blocks per game: Ben Simmons (LSU), Evan Turner (Ohio State), Julius Hodge (N.C. State) and Dwyane Wade (Marquette).
The 2020 Naismith High School Trophy winner, Cunningham is looking to join Shane Battier as the only players to win both the Naismith prep and collegiate honors. The Arlington, Texas native would be the first Naismith Trophy winner in OSU history, and the first Cowboy to win a major player of the year award since Bob Kurland won that honor from Sporting News in 1946.
Cunningham is one of five freshmen and one of five Big 12 players on the Naismith Midseason Team.
The Naismith Midseason Team will be whittled to 10 national semifinalists and four finalists on March 4 and March 16, respectively. The 2021 Naismith Trophy will be awarded during the Final Four at the Naismith Awards Brunch on April 4.
Cunningham and the Cowboys will open a two-game homestand on Saturday against Kansas State. Tipoff is slated for 11 a.m. on ESPNU.
