Dave Smith Named Big 12 Women’s Cross Country Coach Of The Year
November 23, 2021 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Dave Smith was named Big 12 Women's Coach of the Year by conference coaches, it was announced Tuesday.
The award is the third Women's Coach of the Year honor for Smith, who coached the Cowgirls to their third Big 12 conference championship during his tenure. His three coach of the year honors match his three women's conference titles, which came in 2015, 2019 and 2021.
"It is an honor to be recognized by the coaches of the Big 12, especially in such a strong year for the conference as a whole," Smith said. "Really this is a tribute to the women in our program who worked so hard and performed so well."
The Cowgirls notably finished 13th at this year's NCAA Cross Country Championship, which was their fifth-highest finish in program history and their second-highest finish since Smith took over in 2009 (7th place in 2015).
Smith coached Taylor Roe to her second consecutive top-5 podium finish at the national meet, making her just the fourth Cowgirl in program history to become a multi-time cross country All-American.
He has also coached four other runners (Monika Juodeskaite, Ingeborg Loevnes, Molly Born and Taylor Somers) to All-American finishes at the national meet.
In addition to his three women's conference championships, he also guided the 2015 squad to an NCAA Midwest Regional Championship ahead of their 7th-place finish at nationals.
