Daton Fix Set to Take on the World Championships
October 01, 2021 | Cowboy Wrestling
61 KG Bracket
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State wrestling's two-time All-American Daton Fix will take the mat to compete with the best in the world at the Senior World Championships on Saturday.
The tournament begins on Saturday, October 2 and will extend through October 10 in Oslo, Norway, which is seven hours ahead of U.S. central time. The 61 kg weight class will be featured from the start, competing over the first two days. The first session on Saturday will begin at 3:30 a.m. CT with the semifinals slated for 9:30 a.m. to noon. Should Fix make a medal match, those bouts will take place on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Fix dominated the 61 kg division at the World Team Trials on September 11-12 to claim a spot on his second U.S. Senior World Team, after making his debut in 2019. In five matches, Fix outscored his opponents 41-5 with two tech falls.
"I feel like I'm wrestling the best I have possibly ever, but definitely in a long time," Fix said. "My training has been going really well over the last couple months and a lot of that showed at the World Team Trials."
Fix bumped up a weight class to 61 kg for the Trials due to Thomas Gilman accepting the automatic bid at 57 kg after earning bronze at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. While Fix has competed at 57 kg in the past, including at the U.S. Olympic Trials in April, 61 kg translates to just over 134 pounds, which is slightly heavier than the weight class he wrestles at for Oklahoma State (133 lbs).
"One-hundred-and-thirty-three and 134 pounds is a pretty optimal weight for me," Fix said. "I don't have to kill myself making weight, which is always nice. I definitely feel good when I'm out there wrestling."
Being new to the weight class, Fix has not wrestled most of the competitors in his division. His biggest test will likely come in the form of Russia's Abasgadzhi Magomedov who defeated the Cowboy, 3-2, in their only past encounter back in 2015. Fix will wrestle Bulgaria's Georgi Vangelov in the first round, who placed fifth at the Olympics at 57 kg. Magomedov is on the opposite side of the bracket as Fix, but a possible quarterfinal matchup with 2019 world champion Beka Lomtadze (Georgia) is one to keep an eye on.
As Fix looks to medal after not placing at the 2019 Senior World Championships in Kazakhstan, fans can stream the tournament on FloWrestling.com and follow along on Twitter through @USAWrestling or @CowboyWrestling.
