2011 Cowboys to be Honored on Saturday: A Record-Breaking Season
October 01, 2021 | Cowboy Football
It's been 10 years since one of the greatest seasons in the history of Oklahoma State football. The 2011 Cowboys set a new height for the program and put OSU on the national map in college football to stay. On Saturday, members of the 2011 team will be honored during Oklahoma State's top-25 showdown against No. 21 Baylor.
The 2011 Cowboys was a team composed of a lethal offense paired with an opportunistic defense. The team went 12-1 on the season winning the school's first Big 12 Championship and finishing third in the final AP poll, the highest final ranking ever by an OSU team.
Led by the dynamic duo of Brandon Weeden and Justin Blackmon, the Cowboy offense had shattered nearly every offensive passing and scoring record.
As an offense, the Cowboys scored the most points in a single season (633), had the highest scoring average over a 13-game season (48.7) and scored the most touchdowns (81) in program history, which still stand today.
The Weeden-to-Blackmon connection rewrote the record books at Oklahoma State as the pair held nearly every passing and receiving record after the 2011 season. Ten years after the historic season, Weeden is still the single season record holder for passes completed in a season (409), passes attempted (565), completion percentage (72.4%) and passing touchdowns (37). His 4,727 passing yards was also a school record until Mason Rudolph topped it in 2017 with 4,904.
As for Blackmon, the two-time unanimous All-American and Biletnikoff Award winner set the receptions record with 122 catches in 2011 that is still the school record. He is also the record holder for receiving yards, touchdowns and consecutive games with consecutive games with a touchdown catch and 100 receiving yards, which he set in his 2010 season.
Along with an aerial attack that had six of the seven games with the most passing yards in program history, running back Joseph Randle surpassed 1,000 yards on the ground and scored 24 rushing touchdowns in the 2011 season. His 24 touchdowns are only behind Barry Sanders' 37 scores in 1988 and Terry Miller's 27 in 1976.
The Cowboys were so potent in 2011, they set a school record for least time of possession per game, only holding the ball for 26:18 on average. The efficiency of the offense impacted a defensive unit that gave up a bunch of yards but was better than given credit for. An opportunistic Cowboy defense was prone to forcing turnovers, leading the 2011 team to a +21 turnover margin that is tied with the 1983 team for the largest margin.
Quinn Sharp made the Cowboys a complete team as he handled the punting and kicking duties for the special teams unit. His 79 successful PAT's in the 2011 season is still standing today and although he only punted 49 times on the season, he was effective averaging a school record 46.28 yards per punt.
