STILLWATER – Entering the season opener against Tulsa, No. 15 Oklahoma State holds its highest preseason ranking since 2017.
Â
"I think we have a really good skillset," Cowboy head coach Mike Gundy said. "We have depth, we have maturity and we have players who have competed in big-time conference games at home, on the road and in bowl games. In my opinion that is an important ingredient in having a really good season."
After racking up 328 carries last season on his way to leading the nation in rushing yards, Chuba Hubbard opted to forego the NFL and return to Oklahoma State. He will be a big part of steering the Cowboys toward their goals for the season. When the Cowboys take the field Saturday, Hubbard will look to repeat his 2019 performance against Tulsa where he rushed for 256 yards and three touchdowns.
Â
"He's going to get his carries," Gundy said. "We will base it on how he feels throughout the game. I would hope he doesn't have to carry it 30 times a game, but if he does for us to be successful on offense and he feels good, then we will continue to give it to him."
Â
In order for Hubbard to hit the numbers he posted last season, he will rely on a young offensive line to open holes for him to run through.
Â
With a number of departures from last season's group, West Virginia transfer Josh Sills will be an important piece in bringing experience to the group up front. Sills has received high praise since arriving in Stillwater for the way he has fit into the team on and off the field. Â
Â
"Josh has been a nice addition for us," Gundy said. "He fits into our culture. He enjoys living in Stillwater. He likes to hunt and do outdoor activities. His attitude, willingness to be a part of the team, compete and not be scared to work are why we are thrilled to have him."
Â
The Cowboys kick off the 2020 season in Boone Pickens Stadium on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. against Tulsa as part of the Bank of Oklahoma Turnpike Classic series. The game can be seen on either ESPN or ESPNU.
