STILLWATER – There is a certain energy to a football game day at Oklahoma State that both Cowboy fans and visitors have come to appreciate over the years. The energy extends down to the field where the players and coaches feel it as well.
Social distancing measures have changed how game day will look in 2020, but All-America receiver Tylan Wallace will take extra satisfaction when the Cowboys take on Tulsa this Saturday at 11 a.m. CT.
After a 2018 season in which he was one of three national finalists for the Biletnikoff Award presented to the nation's top receiver, Wallace was well on his way to making a second run at the Biletnikoff in 2019 before sustaining an injury in practice in advance of the Cowboys' week nine battle with TCU.
At the time of his injury, he was averaging 112.9 receiving yards per game and was leading the nation in catches of 60 yards or longer, catches of 70 yards or longer and catches of 90 yards or longer. The season came to an abrupt end for Wallace, but Saturday's matchup with Tulsa marks his return.
"We're all excited, especially me," he said in advance of the 2020 season opener. "I am ready to get out there and pick up where I left off last year. These are real exciting times and I think everybody's ready to play."
Part of the reason for Wallace's excitement is the journey he took to get to this point. He went through a rehab process and said he had to make some adjustments on his path to recovery.
"Going out and running routes without the brace, there was a knocking off the rust period for me but I feel like I'm back where I was," Wallace said. "I'm ready to go play."
Another reason for his excitement is the talented Oklahoma State receiver corps he represents.
"We have guys that are twos and threes that can go out and make plays," Wallace said. "These are all playmakers, no matter who we put in there."
With his explosive talent and proven leadership, Wallace has endeared himself to Oklahoma State fans, but those who know him personally gravitate to him not because of football, but for his likable personality, his intelligence and his positive approach to life.
"Tylan is phenomenal. Not only is he a great receiver, but he's a great person," quarterback Spencer Sanders said. "He holds himself accountable to do his job and he's going to do what he has put on film the past three years. I love watching Tylan play."
